Following the War of Independence, after Spain had lost her American colonies, merchant marine ships all but disappeared from the peninsula, leaving only small coastal sailing boats behind to re-establish the routes to the Antilles. Through the Royal Decree issued by Charles III, trade was re-opened with those colonies that remained faithful & it was the felucca, “ San Juan” (El Glorioso), that made the first voyage. This galleon is a direct descendant of the "caracks", large, distinguished galleons, originally Mediterranean based but later sailing the Atlantic. The name galleon was first given to a type of ship from Liguria, built at the start of the 16th century. Initially designed as merchantmen, they were heavily armed for defence against pirates & other enemies, but ended up becoming men of war after 1570. Although the galleons reached their greatest splendour when they plied the Atlantic, (the height of their development), they were the result of accumulated experiences on the European Atlantic front, & their experiences as merchantmen in the Mediterranean. The galleon named San Martin was built in Portugal & became Spanish property in 1580. It was the flagship of the Spanish Armada. On 22nd March 1588, Alonso Pérez de Guzman, the duke of Medina-Sidonia, admiral of the Spanish armada, unfurled his ensign on the galleon's mainmast. The Santísima Trinidad was built in Havana & launched on 2nd March 1769. It was the biggest warship of the 18th century, with 130 guns. After taking part in the naval campaigns of the late 18th & early 19th century, it last saw active service at the battle of Trafalgar, under the ensign of rear admiral Cisneros, where it was dismasted by the English fleet.
