Sharpening workshop tools is probably the most diverse of all workshop activities & the one that is least understood by the majority of workshop owners. This is not unreasonable in view of the wide range of equiptment suggested for the task, ranging from the complex, typically an industrial tool & cutter grinder, through to the humble off hand grinder. This book illustrates how most sharpening tasks can be carried out using an off hand grinder & a few simple accessories, whilst doing this to a standard comparable to that archieved using much more sophisticated equiptment.A lack of understanding of the processes almost certainly results in the workshop owner attempting with far from perfect cutting tools that can diminish the satisfaction of a job well done. With the information in this book this situation can be avoided & working with blunt tooling should be a thing of the past. Other books in the series are also available:1

When Harold Hall was Editor of Model Engineer's Workshop magazine, he was surprised by just how many of his readers had no access to a workshop at home, or even at college. His new book is a complete guide to building or converting a workshop space & then equipping it to serve a wide range of metalworking activities, including model engineering, model making, car restoration & clockmaking. It explains all the essential requirements of the workshop environment: planning, heating & lighting, condensation plus health & safety factor. It then explains in detail the choice of various tools & equipment for differing tasks so the new workshop owner can avoid making unwise purchases.160 pages; 191 b&w photographs; 16 line drawings; paperback. ...

Book 49 The Milling Machine by Harold Hall ISBN:9781854862662 This book deals with the process of choosing & using a milling machine & its accessories. In addition to the machine itself, the accessories include the cutters, cutter chucks, workpiece clamps, vices, angle plates, dividing heads, rotary tables, boring heads & other minor items. The content is divided into three main sections. Firstly, it describes what machines & accessories are available & covering each one in detail. The author explains which are essential & which can be obtained when the workshop activity eventually demands one. There are also suggestions on how the equipment chosen should be installed. The usage of each machine & accessory is covered for all but their most complex uses. Typically, using the rotary table & the dividing head are both described to a detail sufficient for the majority of uses that will surface in the home workshop. The third section deals with the actual machining process, covering the choice of the cutter for the task in h&, the speeds to use & how the direction of the feed relative to the cutter rotation is vitally important. A less-understood feature of milling, back cutting, is also explained. About the Author Harold Hall established his reputation as the mentor of model engineering techniques to beginners in the hobby through the pages of Model Engineers Workshop Magazine, of which he was the editor for many years. His logical organisation & clear writing style reveals a master teacher who understands how to communicate basic instruction to his readers. ...
