The Bismarck is probably the most famous warship in the world. The German battleship, 45, 000 tons, was completed in early 1941 & went on to sink the ' Mighty Hood', pride of the Royal Navy, during one of the most sensational naval encounters ever. After a dramatic chase around the North Atlantic, involving many units of the Royal Navy, Bismarck was finally dispatched with gunfire & torpedoes on 27 May, less than five months after she was completed. Her wreck still lies where she sank, 4800m down & 960km off the west coast of France. Author: Jack Brower 176 pages 240 x 254mm Hardback The Battleship Bismarck is the finest documentation of this famous ship ever published. What makes this & all ' Anatomy of the Ship' volumes unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details, photos & a record of the ship’s service history. Complete with an extended ship's plan on the reverse of a fold-out jacket. On the successful completion of the War of Independence, the American navy was disbanded, & it was not until the late 1790s that a regular naval force was reconstituted. Provoked by the need to protect American merchant shipping from the belligerent European nations & the piratical Barbary powers, Congress decided on a programme of frigate building, which included the 32-gun frigate Essex. Designed by William Hackett, Essex was a typical medium frigate of her time. Working from both US & British sources, the author has reconstructed many previously undetermined details of the ship & in passing has rehabilitated the reputation of the designer as one who was responsible for one of the best balanced frigates of that generation. The distinguished career of the carrier Victorious extended from World War II to 1967. A major refit during the 1950’s, saw her emerge as the Royal Navy’s most advanced carrier in the world. The author’s drawings show all the changes which she underwent during her long career, while the text focuses especially on her war service which included a number of daring airstrikes, most notably against the German battleships Bismarck & Tirpitz. Later she sailed for the Far East where she was part of the British Pacific Fleet; there she withstood several kamikaze attacks. The destroyer Campbeltown is most famous for her part in the commando raid on the St Nazaire drydock in 1942. Built as the USS Buchanan (DD131)- & later renamed Campbelton
- she was one of over 270 flush-decked destroyers put into service towards the end of World War I. The Takao class of Japanese heavy cruisers was approved in the 1927–31 building programme, & the Takao was the first of four vessels launched between May 1930 & April 1931. These were genuinely aggressive ships, being fast, heavily armed with both guns & torpedos, & well-protected. They saw much action in the Pacific War between 1941 & 1945, but Takao, having survived a torpedo attack during the Leyte Gulf battle preliminaries, was sunk by a British midget submarine in Singapore Harbour.
