The Staghound armoured car was conceived in the US at the start of WW2, based on a British specificationwhich required a wheeled reconnaissance vehicle with a high level of protection, therefore armour plated, well armed, and highly mobile. The Chevrolet design proposed a large armoured car which, following anextended programme of assessment and testing, went into production in late 1942, too late to be sent toBritish forces engaged in North Africa. Allied forces were to receive the Staghound in the Spring of 1943and they were used in the Italian campaign by British and Polish armies In spite of the impressiveperformance of this vehicle it was not adopted by the US army and so the 3, 000 units produced were usedsolely by British and Commonwealth forces. Post war the Staghound was widely issued to the new Europeanarmies where some examples were in use into the 1970s.New Release
The M4 DV was an early-production variant of the Sherman, with DV standing for “Direct Vision”. This refers to the armoured visors for the driver and co-driver at the front of the hull. On later vehicles these were deleted from the glacis plate in the interests of armor integrity. Dragon has previously released an M4A1 DV, but this newest kit is the M4 with welded hull and three-piece bolted nose, such as those tanks produced at the Baldwin Locomotive Plant.Baldwin manufactured 1233 tanks from January 1943 through to January 1944. This 1/35 scale kit includes a brand new upper hull that correctly depicts the DV slots. For greater versatility, these vision-port covers can be displayed open or closed. The hull also correctly depicts the 90* angle at the lower rear corner. This is a fine Smart Kit filled with practical touches like T41 tracks made from DS, and widespread use of slide-molded components. As a Smart Kit it is finely engineered and gives Sherman lovers yet another object upon which to direct their vision! The AB 40 armoured car was devised for the Italian Royal Army in the late 1930s, to replace the old Lancia models. The vehicle was innovative at the time, being a four-wheel drive with separate suspensions and two driving positions. The armoured car was fitted with two 8mm machine guns in the turret and another in the rear of the hull, but was only built in small numbers for evaluation purposes, as development of the more sophisticated AB 41 was already underway.
Italieri Pz.Kpfw.VI Tiger I Hibryd (6487) During the last years of the war, the Germans, to make up for their scarce production output, reconditioned vehicles that were worn-out by the war use. Period photos show that at the moment of Germany's defeat, many vehicles had been collected in factories, and were ready to be put back in operation by replacing worn-out or combat-damaged parts. Reliable sources confirm that the last Tigers to come out of assembly lines were reconstructed with salvaged materials: 54 hulls and 32 turrets of the first series, possibly from tanks used in training units. Their wheels were replaced by the latest, full-metal ones, and on some tanks the anti-magnetic “Zimmerit” paste was applied directly in the factory. These tanks were assigned to training schools to form new crews. In the last weeks of war, they took part in the last engagements of the various Kampfgruppe (combat groups formed with units coming from different detachments) that were trying to stop the Allied units swarming over Germany from East and West. Sd.Kfz.251/10 is an armored fi ghting vehicle of commanders of motorized infantry platoons. The crew consisted of 5 men. Equipped with PaK 35/36 anti-tank gun, being dubbed “Door Knocker”, it was mounted at the upper front hull of the vehicle. The rear hull was equipped with a machine gun or a PzB39 anti-tank rifl e. At the Eastern Front, where Germans had to fi ght against Soviet medium and heavy tanks with antishell armor, the ineffi ciency of the small gun quickly became obvious. However, only during the second half of World War II Sd.Kfz.251/10s were withdrawn from the fi ghting forces. Before this, they had already taken part in largescale operations at all fronts of World War II.
The Daimler Scout Car, known in service as the "Dingo" (after the Australian wild dogs), was a British light fast 4WD reconnaissance vehicle also used in the liaison role during the Second World War. HistoryIn 1938 the British War Office issued a specification for a scouting vehicle. Out of three designs submitted by Alvis, BSA and Morris, the one by BSA was selected. The actual production was passed to Daimler, which was a vehicle manufacturer in the BSA group of companies. The vehicle was officially designated Daimler Scout Car, but became widely known as Dingo, which was the name of the competing Alvis prototype.Arguably one of the finest armoured fighting vehicles built in Britain during the war, the Dingo was a small two-man armoured car. It was well protected for its size with 30 mm of armour at the front. The engine was located at the rear of the vehicle. One of the ingenious features of Dingo was the transmission; a pre-selector gearbox and fluid flywheel that gave five speeds in both directions. Original version had four-wheel steering; however this feature was dropped in Mk II because inexperienced drivers found the vehicle hard to control.Although the Dingo featured a flat plate beneath the chassis to slide across uneven ground, it was extremely vulnerable to mines. No spare wheel was carried, but it was not really necessary because of the use of run-flat (nearly solid) rubber tyres instead of pneumatic. Despite the hard tyres, the independent suspension gave it a very comfortable ride. A swivelling seat next to the driver allowed the other crew member to attend to the No. 19 wireless set or Bren gun when required. The Dingo was first used by the British Expeditionary Force (1st Armoured Division and 4th Northumberland Fusilers) during the Battle of France. It turned out to be so successful that no replacement was sought until 1952 with the production of the Daimler Ferret. In mid-70s the Dingo was still used by Cyprus, Portugal and Sri Lanka.
Italeri SD.KFZ. 10/4 with Flak 30 (6395) This small half-track vehicle with platform designed to accommodate the 2 CM. FLAK 30 antiaircraft cannon, was built for the German army at the beginning of the 2nd World War. Its purpose was to protect tank divisions against the threat of enemy fighter-bombers, in addition to offering direct firing support for the infantry. The half-track vehicle offered excellent off-road performance and was very sturdy indeed, as abundantly demonstrated during the Russian Campaign carried out under highly exacting conditions due to the almost total absence of roads, and very severe weather. This kit obviously shares sprues with the recent Sd.Kfz 7 and 7/1 variant that was just released. The Dragon Quad Gun Trailer M55 was developed in 1943 and combined the Trailer M20 with the Multiple Machine Gun Mount M45. It provided airborne units with a lightweight anti-aircraft platform that could be airlifted by a glider and towed by a jeep. During the Korean War, M55 equipped units were among the first U.S. troops to see combat against the North Koreans. After air superiority was established, M55’s were used successfully in the anti-personnel role. In Vietnam, they were used for perimeter defense at fire support bases and as the main armament on a variety of “Gun Trucks”.The kit consists of 133 parts on six plastic sprues and one PE fret. Also included is a small decal sheet with markings for the Ammunition Chest M2. Of the 133 parts, 27 are not used. These include parts for 4 Ammunition Chest M2, 4 spare. 50 caliber barrels, and some clear parts such as headlight lenses and a M2/M3 half-track windshield. If you have an older Tamiya U.S. halftrack, these will be nice parts to use on it. A 6 page, 7-step instruction booklet is also included. All of the parts in my sample kit were crisply molded with no flash or warping. Very few injector pin marks were evident but several of the parts did have injector tabs attached to them. The ones on the. 50 caliber barrels need the most care in removing so you don’t gouge the barrels too badly. Manufacturer: DragonProduct name/code number: Quad Gun Trailer M55 (6421)
