Book Description Annemieke Mein demonstrates how to combine embroidery, fabric painting & textiles to create an exciting sculptural medium. The textile works of Annemieke Mein display a rare standard of artistry. She has explored beyond the bounds of craft & developed new techniques in her use of textiles & fabric paints. The illustrations in this book show how textiles can be used as an exciting sculptural medium. The artist's three-dimensional creations are works of extraordinary skill, born out of a passionate commitment to the environment that she observes with a loving eye. Annemieke uses an amazing variety of materials
- silk, wool, fur, cotton, synthetics
- carefully chosen for their colour, texture, credibility & aesthetic appeal. These fabrics are then meticulously painted & stitched to faithfully reproduce her chosen subjects & to enhance the tactile quality unique to textiles. Numerous techniques are used in limitless combinations: hand & machine embroidery, dyeing, appliqué, trapunto, quilting, pleating, felting, beading, weaving & plying. The work of Annemieke Mein will leave the reader breathless with wonder. It encourages an awareness of our natural heritage & of the need to preserve it. About The Author Annemieke Mein was born in Haarlem, Holl&, in 1944. She & her parents migrated to Australia in 1951 & all became Australian citizens in 1956. After attending school in Melbourne, Annemieke took up a career in nursing, graduating in 1967. She married Phillip Mein in 1968 & they moved to Sale in south-eastern Victoria in 1971. Annemieke has become internationally recognised as an artist & craftsman. She was the first textile artist to be accepted as a member of both the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia & the Australian Guild of Realist Artists. In 1988 she had similar works touring Australia in both art & craft exhibitions. She is the only textile artist to be featured in Australian Artist. She has exhibited at State & regional galleries in Australia & in 1980 won the inaugural Hoechst Textile Award. She is represented in the Hoechst & Husqvarna international collections, in private, national & State collections in Australia & in private collections in Holl&, Sweden, the United Stated, United Kingdom, New Zeal&, Japan & Canada. In 1988 she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal 'for services to the Arts, particularly in textile sculptures & bronze bas-relief sculptures'. Reviews Embroidery Magazine Jul 05 Annemieke Mein is a textile artist whose extraordinarily beautiful work is born out of a passionate commitment to the world of nature. She says ' Textile art & wildlife have become my hobby, profession & addition'. The illustrations & fascinating text descrive Annemieke's close & loving relationship to nature's creatures, & we feel drawn to share in their most intimate & fragile existence. Her works are designed to have strong visual & tactile impact attained by combining large reliefs, textural variations & gorgeous colour combinations. The illustrations are alive with butterflies, moths, dragonflies, frogs, mayflies & even barnacles. So meticulous is Annemieke's attention to detail & realism, that one's fingers travel the pages to feel the stitches, the cloth, the fur, the leaves
- it is irresistible. Simple materials are chosen for their colour, texture, durability & aesthetic appeal such as silk wadding, satin, fur, synthetics, mohair, wool scraps & even old ties. These combine with numerous embroidery techniques, such as machine & hand stitching, appliqué, trapunto, quilting & pleating to create fine textile art.
