Journal Quilt Challenge: Fire & Ice by Ferret To finish off our series of journal quilt challenges, Ferret tackles machine quilting in her own style... Ferret says: Journal quilts offer a great opportunity to learn new techniques, but I never imagined how much I would learn from making these for you. Fire was a very tricky quilt for me to work on, & I nearly didn’t write it up. Then I realised, for some people, this will be the perfect project. For all of you who find it easy to work with small pieces of machine quilting & who find their quilting designs tend to miniature, Fire is the project for you. For those who like to grab a big handful of their project when free machine quilting, I suggest you try Ice. This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in December 2009. It is a Digital Edition & comes as a downloadable PDF file. Template (s) for this project is on the last page of the file. Please check your printer settings when printing to ensure that there are no added margins. There is also a 1 square printed on the last page to help you check if your printer is printing out to the correct size. ...

Journal Quilt Challenge: Tempting Twins by Pat Stone Pat Stone introduces the delights of using a twin needle... Twin needle work is easy & has many applications including quilting, embroidery, smocking, cording & even free motion embroidery & it’s fun to do! Pat’s journal quilt does not have a theme to it, beyond a love of playing with the twin needle technique. You could adapt this technique to your own journal quilt theme. For example, you could cut different shapes from the twin needled silk rather than squares, such as circles or leaves. Your stitching need not be in straight lines. You can also use the colour to affect the mood of your journal quilt. Think about what you are trying to convey to your viewers & just enjoy experimenting with the technique – how far can you take it? This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in June 2009. It is a Digital Edition & comes as a downloadable PDF file. ...

Journal Quilt Challenge: Texture by Frieda Oxenham Frieda Oxenham shows us a textural embellishment technique: what will yours look like? Frieda chose the theme of New Dawn, but the idea of the journal quilts is to apply the technique to your own theme, rather than slavishly copying her piece. Journal Quilt Challenge: Wholecloth Quilting by Jenny Barlow This time Jenny Barlow introduces the basis of wholecloth quilting. Join in for a challenge! Jenny started quilting in the late 1970s making items such as cot quilts for her second child & hangings to cover worn plaster in a nursery. She went to patchwork & quilting classes held by a wide variety of teachers, learning many different techniques. Amongst these, Amy Emms & Lilian Hedley, both very traditional Durham quilters & teachers, helped develop her interest in Durham quilts with their characteristically plain fabric enhanced with beautiful & sympathetic patterns based on feathers, cables & leaves. Once she had mastered making these patterns, a quilt followed. This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in November 2009. It is a Digital Edition & comes as a downloadable PDF file. Template for this project is of A3 size. You need to purchase it separately & it will be printed out & sent directly to your home. ...

Journal Quilt Challenge: Working With Sheer Fabrics By Elizabeth Stone

Journal Quilt Challenge: Working with Sheer Fabrics by Elizabeth Stone Elizabeth Stone has created this simple but effective Journal Quilt using layers of sheer fabric over painted images. She was inspired by the sample pieces that her mother, Pat Stone created whilst studying for her arts degree. Pat realised that by using sheer fabrics over a painted fl at surface, she could give her work texture and perspective. The rippled surface of water could be created by strips of sheers over a solid blue/green background; or the changing colour of the sky as the sun sets could be echoed in different shades and layers of sheers. The possibilities are endless... This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in October 2009. It is a Digital Edition and comes as a
downloadable PDF file.
