Only weeks after the movie release, the Trans Am became a national icon. Sales almost doubled in one year. In fact, during the summer > Smokey & the Bandit> was released, car sales jumped 30, 000 units from 68, 745 to 93, 341. The following year, in 1978, sales skyrocketed even higher, putting over 100, 000 Trans Ams on the road. While the car chases in the film are not the absolute technical best, the Pontiac® Trans Am stole scene after scene & was undeniably the most pervasive & appealing aspect of the film. Now a movie legend over 30 years old, the word “ Trans Am” still undeniably calls to mind the awesome black Trans Am in this immortal movie, with its “screaming chicken” on the hood – & of course, the brawny star behind the wheel... Burt Reynolds.
