McQueen himself was the force behind the most talked about scene in Bullitt. Determined to shoot the best car chase ever, the finest stunt coordinators and drivers in the motion picture industry were used to >choreograph> and perform the nine+ minute turbo charged chase, to the accompaniment of squealing brakes, growling exhausts and grating of gears. The entire sequence took three weeks to film, with McQueen himself behind the wheel through much of the chase. Unlike classic film chases of the past, traditionally filmed at slow speeds and then sped up by the editor, there were no special effects
employed in the Bullitt chase sequence. What you see is what you get. The cars were shot at real-time speeds, frequently clocked at 124mph!
