- 1882 Darwin initially studied to be a clergyman but became more interested in natural history. In 1831 he set off in a naval ship (HMS Beagle) to study geology, biology & natural history in South America (including the Galapagos Islands). Here he studied animal & plant life & devised his famous theory of natural selection; where organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive & pass on beneficial genetic traits to offspring. He went on the publish his findings in the famous book titled, On The Origin of Species in 1859. He went on to publish The Descent of Man & Selection in Relation to Sex in 1871, which revealed that humans evolved from apes.
