Hermann Marwede is one of the most modern ships of this type in the world. It is the largest Ocean-going rescue ship ever to enter service in Germany. The ship was named in the Summer of 2003 & is stationed on the North Sea Island of Helgol&. It has a maximum speed of 25 knots (46.3 km/h; 28.75 mph) & a maximum range of 3926 km (2438 st. miles). Propulsion is provided by three engines with a total power output of 9250 Bhp. The ship has its own small hospital, a crane, an inflatable boat, fire fighting appliances & a Helicopter Landing Platform on-board. The on-board inshore craft can achieve a speed of 18 knots (21 mph) & also operate in shallow waters. Since its formation in 1865, members of the DGz RS (German Lifeboat Institution) have saved over 76000 people from life-threatening situations. The rescue work of the institution is financed completely from charitable donations.
