When first confronted with Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice I was not exactly thrilled. I was told it was about morality, breeding, class, manners & romance. Great, I was 15, at a boys grammar school & possessed exactly none of the afore mentioned attributes. However, not that I would admit it at the time, I loved it. I was locked in some literary closet devouring the 19th Century world of landed gentry. Elizabeth Bennet was like no girl I'd encountered & Mr Darcy was the inspiration for my brief, ill-advised Byronic approach to the ladies. Did it work? In my mind, yes. In reality? Probably not.
