The Pitmen Painters at The Duchess Theatre, London The Incredible Story of the Ashington Group Written by Billy Elliot creator Lee Hall, inspired by the book by William Feaver, The Pitmen Painters tells the true story of group of Northumberland miners who began a self-taught painting society that saw them become known as the Ashington Group & saw their work celebrated in the British art world of the 1930s & 1940s. The Pitmen Painters was first performed at Newcastle’s Live Theatre in 2007 before opening at the National Theatre in 2008. The show then embarking on a successful UK tour prior to its West End transfer.
