The Madness of George III at the Apollo Theatre A Brilliant Biographical Drama Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III was first staged in November 1991 at the National Theatre where it was directed by Nicholas Hytner. It featured Nigel Hawthorne as ‘ King George III’ & went on to tour the UK & USA after a critically acclaimed London run. A film adaptation, The Madness of King George, was released in 1994 with Hawthorne reprising his regal role alongside Helen Mirren & Rupert Everett. Set around the time of the Regency Crisis of 1788, The Madness of George III tells the story of the monarch’s swift descent into a mental illness that baffled his doctors & initiated a struggle for power amongst the leading politicians & his scheming son, the Prince of Wales.
