The policy of evacuating children from the larger cities vulnerable to bombing by the Luftwaffe, was not compulsory. However at the start of World War ll, nearly 2 million children were sent away, many not knowing where they would end up. The young evacuees endured hardships, including living with strangers away from the bosom of their own families.
