Acetyl L-carnitine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks of proteins necessary for metabolism by helping the body convert fat into energy. It helps transport fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells where they are oxidised to produce energy.

Acetyl L-carnitine is produced by the body from carnitine; an amino acid found mainly in animal-based food sources. This means that those following a vegan or vegetarian diet may find it difficult to obtain enough from the foods that they eat, a supplement is a great way to bridge that nutritional gap.

Carnitine levels are also believed to decrease as we age, making supplementation helpful if you fall into an older age group.
