Get in a canoe & paddle out for lunch in the wild on these foraging experiences near Keswick! Make no mistake this isn’t a paddle out for a BBQ with goodies from your local supermarket. You will be on an island where you will catch find prep & cook food for a meal with a difference.
Your meeting point is a marina on the edge of Derwent Water where you’ll get in canoes to paddle across to a remote isl&. From that moment on it’s all about preparing your meal. This is al fresco dining foraging style. If you know where to look & what to look for Mother Nature provides you with everything you need to survive & eat. Right down to fashioning your own spoons out of wood this is taking food preparation back to basics.
You’ll be shown how to make & where to place a trap. You’ll discover which plants are edible & which are not. You’ll learn how to gather & purify water for drinking & cooking. You’ll help prepare the fire for cooking on. & you’ll be whittling those all important spoons yourselves too that you’ll then use when cooking your meal.
An integral part of these fascinating foraging experiences is the trap. You’ll be preparing what you’ve caught (usually rabbit) for cooking & you are welcome to participate or observe. If you’d rather not take part at all in this part of the course that’s fine too & shouldn’t put you off booking onto the experience
- there’s plenty more foraging to do!
As you can imagine a bit of remoteness off the usual beaten paths of Cumbria is required for this course which is why canoeing out to an island is part of your day. It’ll take you away from civilisation (or at least where you parked the car!) to the island basecamp without trekking for hours. It’s a paddle & then getting stuck in & finding what rich flora & fauna is right at your feet.
Using a mix of team-based challenges demonstrations & tasks this full day out is bound to be fruitful in every sense of the word. You’ll learn lots discover new things & try out new skills. Who’d have thought you’d be eating a proper bush tucker meal thanks to everything you were taught during your foraging experience in Keswick!
