Art architecture & fine dining combine for this Royal Academy afternoon tea! The imposing Burlington House is home to the Royal Academy of Arts in the heart of Piccadilly. We can highly recommend a visit to peruse the temporary & permanent exhibitions at the Royal Academy which is something you can perhaps do before heading for your afternoon tea as all that admiring of paintings & sculptures is bound to work up an appetite.
Within the Royal Academy you’ll find the Keeper’s House run by renowned restaurateurs Peyton & Byrne & this is where you’ll be having your afternoon tea. Originally built in the 1870s as a grace & favour house for the Keeper of the Royal Academy today it has a rather cool gentleman's club style atmosphere with plush white leather banquettes & chairs & classic dark wood panelling.
At the entrance make sure you check out the sign above the door to this basement restaurant. At first sight you might think a neon sign is a bit much for this sober building but it's actually an art installation by Tracey Emin called ' Keep me Safe'. Outside there is a delightful walled garden which is a haven of peace especially when you think the Royal Academy of Arts is right in the middle of a main road in Mayfair & you can choose to take afternoon tea outside if the weather is clement.
The Peyton & Byrne afternoon tea menu comprises everything you’d expect of an afternoon tea in such an illustrious location. Small with careful lighting & decoration strikes just the right balance of cosy & stylish
- & what an impressive ceiling! It’s the sort of place that you’d have to know it was there as it is in a very discrete niche & staff are attentive & welcoming.
We think this this rather unique basement cafe is a great place for your Royal Academy afternoon tea. Settle into your seat sip on freshly brewed tea & munch on your medley of cakes on your classic high tea experience with that contemporary Peyton & Byrne twist. Tea lovers will be especially spoilt with a range of over 40 different teas & infusions & for a bit of extra sparkle to your afternoon go for the Champagne option.
