Go microlighting in East Anglia! Based at Beccles Airfield on the Norfolk & Suffolk border this small & friendly flying school is a joy to visit surrounded by quiet countryside & lots of unrestricted airspace. Known locally as Ellough Airfield Beccles was built as an RAF station in the Second World War being occupied by RAF Bomber & Coastal Comm&. & in fact Beccles was used as an air sea rescue post until its closure in 1945. It all went quiet in this tranquil corner of East Anglia until 1965 when Beccles became a heliport for North Sea oil operations. Since then the General Aviation activities that include helicopters light aircraft parachuting & now microlighting has kept Beccles Aerodrome busy. For your microlighting lesson there are two (technically speaking) very similar aircraft available. Both come in at under 450kg so are classed as microlights. Both have the same size engine & both seat two people. But take one look at the flex wing microlight next... ...

Fun flexwing microlighting near Nottingham! occupying a discrete little flying field not far from Ilkeston this is a great place to go microlighting. & there's none of that enclosed cockpit business going on here this is grass roots flex-wing open- cockpit aviation at its very best! With big cities like Nottingham Derby & bustling Ilkeston town all nearby you'd be forgiven for thinking this airfield was in the middle of a build-up area. But it's not. This is where the industrial heritage of the East Midlands meets the tranquility of the Derbyshire Dales. It's a true lovely part of the country & very much merits being flown over in a microlight. These ultralight planes are superb for exploring town & countryside. They're small & light so don't need much of a runway to take off. They have a pleasant cruise speed of around 80mph & with a full tank of fuel you can go for around 300 miles. They're the most economical way to get airborne & a great way to really get to see the highlights of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire in a very short space of time when you fly out of Ilkeston. All that means you can get longer in the air in a microlight for the price of a shorter lesson in a traditional light aircraft. This operator does offer a 30 minute flight & it's highly recommended for those of you who just want to dip your toes into this whirly world of open-cockpit tricycle-style microlighting. You stay local perhaps seeing Shipley Country Park the golf course at Morley Hayes & beyond Ilkeston centre to the snaking traffic on the M1. The more adventurous amongst you will love the 60 minute microlight flight. Setting off from this airstrip at West Hallam near Ilkeston means you're in the air long enough to do Carsington Water to the west or perhaps follow the River Derwent to the north & even lovely Chatsworth House & estate. On the 90-minute itinerary you'll be treated to a flight path filled with fabulous things to see from the Tors of the Hope Valley to those iconic towers of the Derwent ' Dam Busters' Dam & lots more. Take those brilliant things to see from the air combine that with the thrill of flying in an open-cockpit flexed-wing aircraft & you've lined yourself up some magnificent microlighting near Nottingham. You might even get to have a go at the controls whilst you up there! ...

From the East Coast to the West Coast microlighting out of Kinross gives you the full view of Scotland's coastline from the air! A new dimension opens up when you soar over this lovely corner of Perth & Kinross in an agile little microlight. Prepare yourself for perfect panoramas with these microlight flights. Taking off from Balado Park (perhaps you knew it as the home of 'T in the Park' for many years?) within literally seconds you have amazing things to to look. There's the former satellite ground station right at the heart of the airfield the original war time hangers & control tower whilst on the horizon you'll see the likes of Loch Leven & the Lomond Hills. It's little wonder then that the team here at Kinross recommends you bring a camera along with you for your flight. You get an excellent viewpoint from the cockpit of a microlight so it's possible to take some great snaps as you fly
- brilliant if you live in the Perth & Kinross as it's rare to see it all from above! It's a small & friendly crew here at Balado Park. The academy's offices are in the restored control tower & there's a warm & welcoming pilot's lounge where the kettle is always on for a brew. Friends & family will love it too as they can climb the exterior steps to the viewing platform at the top of the tower to look out across the whole airfield -ideal for watching your take off & landing. Before you head out to the apron you'll be kitted out with a headset a flying suit & given gloves if it's going to be a bit chilly up there even if the microlights based at Kinross do have closed cockpits as the weather several thousand feet heigh can be very different to on the ground at the same moment. During the pre-flight briefing you'll chat about safety & what you're hoping to get out of your flight; that's to say whether you want it to take the form of an actual lesson or you want to fly over a specific area so you can see it from the air. We think Scotland's Balado Park is a lovely place to fly out of in a microlight. We are offering 30 minute flights. Book microlighting in Kinross & make a budding Scottish aviator very happy!
