Also known as the creeping blue blossom, (or Californian Lilac), this Ceanothus certainly lives up to its name, growing into a gorgeous mounded shrub with glossy evergreen leaves & powder-blue flowers in the spring which will delight everyone who sees it. The pale blue flowers form a spectacular cloud of colour during May & June & will attract a host of butterflies & other pollinators into your garden, making it invaluable for supporting our native wildlife as well as thrilling your senses! Easy to grow & one of the hardiest of the ceanothus family, thyrsiflorus var. repens is compact enough to grow in a pot if your space is limited or it can be grown up a wall where it will climb to higher than its normal 1.5m (45cm) giving your garden height & structure. Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with complete confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come. Supplied as an established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant straight out. Grows to a height of 1.5m (5ft) and width of 4m (13ft). Care Planting Advice for your Ceanothus Grow Ceanothus in a sunny, sheltered site in fertile, well-drained soil, ?protected from winds. Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting & mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole & use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place. We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through. Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly & allow to drain. Remove the plant from its pot & tease out a few of the roots. Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker. Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot & refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball & water well. Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc. If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage & ballast. Use the best compost you can buy & some sand or grit for drainage. Aftercare Advice for Ceanothus Keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot. Hardy to -10°C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.? Pruning Advice for Ceanothus Ceanothus requires no special pruning; only occasional maintenance is needed to remove any growth that has been damaged over winter. - Bubblegum pink flowers with a hint of green fading to violet & pale green as they age. Care Just plant in position, water well, & add some fertiliser
- they’ll burst into growth & flower profusely all summer! This plant is at its best in a most soil as long as it is well drained, in sun or partial shade. The more sun the plant gets, the better the flower colour. A moisture-loving plant, remember to water regularly & deeply. Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so it’s advisable to protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely. Pruning is generally best carried out early spring. A general tidy up is usually all that is needed & consists of removing the dead bloom from each stem, cutting back to the first strong, healthy pair of buds down from the faded flower. As these Hydrangeas flower on the current season’s growth, cut out 1 or 2 of the oldest stems, in spring, at the base to encourage the production of new, replacement growth that will carry more flowers. With their evergreen rosettes of toothed, glossy leaves, these show-stopping beauties are really rewarding with their gorgeous mix of fruity pink, peach, red & yellow colours & the ability to flourish with little more than a pot of free draining compost. In spring tall flower spikes emerge, each topped with vibrantly coloured blooms, which fade through a range of tones that bring a magical quality to the plants. Like many other 'forgotten' plants, Lewisias are undergoing a well-deserved revival & are one of the most spectacular plants that you can grow. Part of a group of plants known as Alpines, they are surprisingly robust & hardy in growth, yet at the same time charming & colourful. Naturally growing in cracks & crevices in rocky areas, Lewisias can cope easily with periods of drought as they are used to sporadic or low rain fall, which make them the perfect candidate for eco-friendly gardens & for areas often subject to hosepipe bans! Plants can be grown in small spaces such as pots & troughs which simulate the natural rocky areas from which many come. This is increasingly important to those of us with small gardens, terraces or balconies. Easy to grow & low maintenance, Lewisias are the perfect plant for new gardeners as you can leave them to their own devices with the occasional watering if conditions get too dry. Supplied as 6 established plants in 9cm pots, ready for planting. Care Planting Advice for your Lewisias: Dig a hole roughly the same diameter as the pot your plant is in. Remove your Lewisia from its pot & tease apart any roots which are spiralling round. Lower the plant into the planting hole & backfill with the original soil, gently firming it around the plant. If you’re growing them in a container, ensure that the container has adequate holes for drainage. Most alpines like a neutral or slightly alkaline soil. Add a well-draining compost mix & plant as above.A layer of coarse gravel on top of the soil will help prevent the neck of the plant getting too damp. Water well. Aftercare Advice for your Lewisia: Once you’ve planted your Lewisia, water it thoroughly. Remove or trim any dead leaves in the autumn.move the container to an area that’s in a ‘rain shadow’ (for example, beneath house eaves) in winter.
