Specifications Category: Flowers/ Perennials Ideal For: Beds/ Borders/ Containers/ Cottage Garden Flowers: July
- August Fruit: September
- October Position: Full Sun – Partial Shade Height/ Spread: 1m x 1m Hardiness: Fully Hardy Supplied as: 3 x plants in 9cm pots ready to plant out, Chinese lanterns are very easy to grow & care for, thriving in a sunny or shady position in preferably moist, well-draining soil. How to Grow Planting Advice for Chinese Lanterns: Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over & removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary. When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting. Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge & pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil. Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep & wide enough to set in the rootball. The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground. Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps & your heel on larger areas. Water in well to settle the soil & prevent desiccation. Contents 3 x Plants

- Rose-pink buds that bloom into a cluster of lilac flowers. Lilac ' Beauty of Moscow'
- Pink buds that open into crisp white flowers. Real sun lovers, lilacs can be grown in just about any soil or can be raised in large containers. For a sensational floral display, year after year, deadhead when two new shoots appear beneath faded blooms & remove any wayward branches to keep a compact shape. Supplied as 3 established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant. Care Planting Advice for lilac Shrub roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting, & mix some well rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole & use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place. We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through. Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly & allow to drain. Remove the plant from its pot & tease out a few of the roots. Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker. Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot. Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball & water well. Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc. Aftercare Advice for Lilac Grow lilac plants in fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Feed & water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Lilac can be pruned in winter or spring by removing any damaged, diseased or misplaced stems before lightly shaping to retain the standard form & height. In mid-summer, faded flowers can be removed from the plants. After pruning, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the lilac. Contents 3 x Plants
