He usually pots them up into much bigger pots, grows them on into huge specimens, & then sells them for hundreds of pounds
- so maybe the glass of wine at lunch persuaded him! Known as ' Niwaki', cloud pruning is a Japanese method of training trees & shrubs into shapes resembling clouds & our grower has done the hard work so you don't have to
- selecting the stronger side branches & carefully pruning them into shape. You can let your imagination take over now, & let them grow as big or little as you wish. Were more than happy to pass this amazing opportunity onto you & give you the change to grow one of these splendid topiary specimens. Perfect as centrepiece specimens in big pots, or in hot, sunny spots of the garden, they are very hardy & easy-care. Prune to shape 3-4 times a year with secateurs or shears, feed with specialist olive feed, & enjoy for years & years. You are unlikely to get any olive fruit by keeping them as cloud-pruned specimens, but then theyre such an outstanding evergreen tree anyway that its not a problem! Stocks are very limited, & we may not have any more in future seasons, so order now to avoid disappointment. If planting in the garden, add grit to the planting hole to improve drainage. Pot grown plants should be transferred to a slightly larger pot each spring. Olive Trees are hardy but they benefit from winter protection. Small potted plants can be moved inside, while outside plants can be bubble-wrapped around the pot & fleece used to protect the canopy. Although drought tolerant, pot-grown olives must be watered regularly & not be allowed to dry out. When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting. Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge & pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil. Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep & wide enough to set in the rootball. The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground. Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps & your heel on larger areas.
