Grapevines Bonsai Bushes in 15cm Pot (Pair) A truly unique & productive pair of plants, these bonsai grapes will produce bunches of red grapes year after year in virtually no space at all! These grapes originate in Sicily, where the old plants were dug up from the commercial fields & potted up
- so they feature marvellous thick stems already & have a history of productivity! Naturally, grape vines are vigorous climbers but when trained into a bonsai form, the Vitis vinifera makes a much more compact shrub with a thick, heavily patterned trunk, with bunches of grapes hanging in decorative clusters. Grape vines are easy to care for & grow, needing just regular watering & feeding & a sunny position. Best grown outside spring to autumn, before being moved into a cooler room over the winter. Plants are self-fertile, & the grapes are ready to be picked when ripe in late summer to early autumn
- the grapes are not affected in any way by the size of the tree. To maintain their shape, the grape bonsais should be pruned in early winter with a sharp pair of snips. Supplied as an established pair of grape plants (one white & one red) in a 15cm pot, plants will grow as tall as you let them, but we recommend keeping them to a maximum 1.4m. Cut back annually to the woody stem to keep your Bonsai at 1m max to allow for new growth the following year. Specifications Ideal For: Grow Your Own/ Wine grapes/ Large pots/ Trellises/ Pergolas Fruit: September
- October Position: Full sun Height/ Spread: 4m x 1.4m Hardiness: Hardy Supplied as: A pair of established plants (1 x Red & 1 x White) in 15cm pots, plants will grow as tall as you let them, but we recommend keeping them to a maximum 1.4m Care of your grape bonsai: Keep it outside in either full sun or partial shade. The grapevine bonsai needs between eight & 10 hours of indirect sunlight each day, along with good air circulation. Protect from extreme cold & if brought indoors, plants should be kept out of direct light. Water thoroughly at least every other day, daily if the weather is warm & ensure that the soil never dries out, although don't allow the plant to stand in water. Use a liquid feed every 2 weeks during the growing season. Grapes are deciduous so lose their leaves in winter & you can water less
- once a week should be sufficient. Repot the grape bonsai every two or three years. At that time, prune back to root ball. Pruning your Bonsai Grape Plant: Plant will put on a lot of growth in spring. Prune back new shoots to prevent them from getting leggy. Prune off any misplaced, suckers & shoots from the base to leave the trunk bare. Prune back to the main frame in autumn, leaving one or two buds for the next season's grapes. Avoid pruning in spring & summer
- the main pruning time is late November or December. Pruning later can cause the vine to bleed sap, weakening the plant. Cut roots back to 1/3rd every other year & replant your bonsai in a pot deeper than 3in filled with free draining soil. As with other bonsai trees, wire may be used to shape branches. Leave the wire in place for up to six months in order to bend the branches in the shape desired. Contents 2 x Plants back to top
