More information about Avamys Nasal Spray

What is Avamys Nasal Spray?

Avamys is an effective medicine that is designed to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, or hay fever.

It comes in the form of a fast-acting nasal spray and can be used to relieve:

  • nasal congestion
  • a runny or itchy nose
  • sneezing
  • itchy or watery eyes

Avamys nasal spray can also be used to treat other allergies, such as those caused by pet dander or dust mites. Using this treatment on a long-term basis can help to control nasal inflammation and congestion.

As well as Avamys, fluticasone furoate nasal sprays can be bought under the brand names Flixonase and Nasofan.

How does it work?

Avamys is a steroid nasal spray. It belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (or steroids for short).

This nasal spray works to relieve inflammation in the nasal passages due to the active ingredient fluticasone furoate.

When administered in the nasal passages, fluticasone furoate is absorbed into the nasal cells. This directly counters allergy symptoms by reducing the activity of the immune system, which reduces nasal inflammation.

What are the benefits?

Avamys is beneficial to hay fever sufferers as it works quickly to relieve uncomfortable allergy symptoms. Having undergone clinical trials Trusted source National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Government Source Biomedical Research and Literature Go to source , this nasal spray has been shown to:

  • relieve a runny or itchy nose
  • relieve a blocked nose and other sinus difficulties
  • prevent sneezing
  • start working within 8-24 hours

Taking effective hay fever medication can improve your quality of life during the pollen season, making it easier to concentrate during the day and improve sleep at night.

How effective is Avamys Nasal Spray?

Avamys has been proven to effectively tackle hay fever symptoms. One study Trusted source National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Government Source Biomedical Research and Literature Go to source compared the efficacy of fluticasone furoate vs a placebo. The results found that:

Using intranasal fluticasone furoate (Avamys) once daily was effective in treating both ocular and nasal hay fever symptoms, causing significant improvements in quality of life.

How do I use it?

Avamys nasal spray should only be used by adults. If you are looking to use Avamys spray for the first time, a guide on preparing and using the spray is written below.

Please note: You should always use prescribed medication per your doctor’s instructions. Please consult the patient information leaflet for a detailed description of using this nasal spray.

Preparing the spray

Avamys is uniquely shaped. It has a rounded cap which covers the nozzle and the button that releases the medicine is located on its side.

Using the spray

Once you have prepared your nasal spray, you’re ready to administer the medicine:

  1. Shake the nasal spray vigorously and remove the cap.
  2. Blow your nose gently to ensure that your nasal passages are clear.
  3. Tilt your head forward and insert the nozzle into one nostril.
  4. Press the spray button while gently inhaling through your nose.
  5. Breathe out through your mouth.
  6. Repeat the above steps with the other nostril before replacing the cap on the bottle.

If you forget to take your nasal spray at your usual time, it is recommended that you miss this dose and wait till the following day to administer the medication.

When using Avamys, try to keep the mist solution away from your eyes. If your eyes do come into contact with the nasal spray mist, rinse them thoroughly and carefully with clean water.

Ensure you use the treatment as recommended by your doctor. Don't use more than the recommended dosage as this could increase your chance of side effects.

If you are using Avamys for hay fever, it is recommended that you start using it a couple of weeks before the pollen season begins.
