An old Chinese custom was to plant a Paulownia whenever a baby girl is born. As they mature together, wood from this tree would then be carved into wooden articles as part of her dowry. Today we know this plant as one of the most spectacular ornamental flowering trees. Grown mainly for the amazing foliage, (each leaf is huge), there is also great excitement in spring, when after a mild winter beautiful violet Foxglove like flowers appear on racemes up to 30cm (12") long. Egg shaped seed pods follow. Prefers well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Height 12m (40"). Spread 10m (33"). Although can be pollarded to keep to the desired size. Hardy perennial.
