Paeonias are amongst the most beautiful of all flowering plants. In 1948 a Japanese nurseryman, Toichi Itoh, succeeded in crossing a hybrid tree peony with a herbaceous peony. He unfortunately passed away before any had flowered. All would have been lost but for an American horticulturist who obtained permission from Itoh"s widow to patent four of the plants in the 1960"s. These plants caused a terrific stir! Itoh hybrid plants look much like a Tree Peony, with a domed shape of handsome foliage but becomes dormant over winter much like an herbaceous Peony, dying back in autumn & reappearing in early spring. Flowering within the second or third year, once established each plant can produce up to 50 blooms each season, & they make excellent cut flowers for the home. Peonies are one of the longest-lived perennials of all. Height & spread 80cm (32"). Hardy perennial. Supplied in 9cm pots from September, this is the best time for planting. Itoh peonies are typically extremely expensive, however, we have been able to offer you an exceptional price by working with a grower who has invested in a tissue culture programme as he loves these plants as much as we do!
