The Gate was constructed between 1788 & 1791 according to the designs of its architect, Carl Gotthard Langhans. The Gate itself is built in sandstone & consists of twelve Doric columns, six to each side, forming five passageways. Citizens originally were allowed to use only the outermost two, the central passageway being reserved for Prussian royalty & visiting foreign dignitaries. Though the Brandenburg Gate has remained essentially unchanged since its completion, it has had a turbulent existence. In 2000, the Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation began a full restoration of the Brandenburg Gate. It opened to the public again on October 3rd 2002, the twelfth anniversary of German Reunification. Today, Brandenburg Gate is regarded as one of Europe's most famous landmarks. ...

Burj Khalifa rises gracefully from the desert & honors Dubai with its extraordinary union of art, engineering & meticulous craftsmanship. At 828 meters (2, 716.5 ft.), the equivalent of a 200-story building, Burj Khalifa has 160 habitable levels, the most of any building in the world. In 2003, as a result of an international design competition, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) was selected from a group of five international competitors to carry out the architecture & engineering of the Burj Khalifa.SOM incorporated patterns & elements from traditional Islamic architecture, but the most inspiring muse was a regional desert flower, the Hymenocallis, whose harmonious structure is one of the organizing principles of the towers design. Three petals are arranged in a triangular shape & unified at the center, & instead of repeated identical patterns, the architectural plan appoints successively receding & rotated stories. To support the unprecedented height of the building, the engineers developed a new structural system called the buttressed core, which consists of a hexagonal core reinforced by three buttresses that form the Y shape. ...

Farnsworth House was designed & constructed between 1945 & 1951 as a one-room weekend retreat, located in a once-rural setting, 89 km (55 miles) southwest of Chicago on a 240, 000 m 2 (60-acre) estate adjoining the Fox River, in the city of Plano, Illinois. Mies van der Rohe conceived Farnsworth House as a structure that was both independent of & intertwined with the nature around it. The simple elongated cubic form of the house runs parallel to the flow of the river & is placed in the cooling shadow of a large & majestic black maple tree. The house is elevated 1.60 m (5.3 ft.) above the flood plain by eight steel columns, which are attached to the sides of the floor & ceiling slabs. The end of the slabs extend beyond the column supports, creating cantilevers. The house seems to float weightlessly above the ground it occupies. The interior appears to be one large room filled with freestanding elements. The space flows around two wood blocks called "cores". The fireplace-kitchen core appears almost as a separate house nestling within the larger glass house. The materials used are quietly luxurious
- travertine floors, primavera paneling & silk curtains
- & the detailing minimal & meticulous.
