His Majestys Ships, particularly the Victory as their flagship, had every reason to celebrate the 21st of October 1805, since they had succeeded in defeating the Franco-Spanish fleet. However celebrations were dampened because the Victorys Commander, Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, lost his life on his ship on the very day of the great Victory. The great heros tomb is in St. Pauls Cathedral, London. Today, the H.M.S. Victory lies in dry-dock in Portsmouth in all her splendour. The whole of England was outraged when it was suggested the ship be scrapped following the Napoleonic wars, so she was reprieved & became the stationary flagship of the commander-in-chief. In 1922 the Victory underwent a comprehensive restoration paid for out of donations. She was then opened to the public as a memorial.
