Aubergine Melanza Prosperosa brings a taste of Italy direct to your home. It produces spherical ribbed pale violet fruits with firm & flavoursome flesh. This Sicilian heritage variety has a mild flavour & no bitter after taste. Ideal for growing in the greenhouse or in a sunny spot outdoors.

Flowering period: July August
Sowing months: Jan-Mar
Position: Full sun

Sow aubergine seeds from February to May for indoor cultivation or March to April for growing outdoors. Soaking them in warm water for 24 hours before sowing will assist germination.

Sow seeds on the surface of a free draining moist seed compost & cover with 6mm layer of vermiculite or compost. Place in a propagator or seal the container inside a polythene bag at constant temperature of 18-21C until after germination which takes 10-14 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle carefully transplant them into 7.5cm pots & grow on at a slightly reduced temperature.

When all risk of frost is passed & the soil is warm harden off & plant aubergines in their final positions. For indoor cultivation pot on into larger containers or plant 2 aubergines per growbag. Outdoors plant aubergines in rich fertile soil at a distance of 90cm apart in rows spaced 90-120cm apart. Grow aubergines in a sheltered position in full sun. Planting through black plastic mulch will help to warm the soil control weeds & save moisture.

Chilli Pepper Peperone Fuego is a hot Cayenne pepper which produces tapering 15cm long fruits that turn from green to fiery red as they ripen. With a compact upright habit & short internodes Chilli Pepper Peperone Fuego is ideal for growing in growbags or containers on the patio. This particular variety produces abundant crops if picked regularly throughout the summer.

Flowering period: Jun-Sep
Sowing months: Jan-Apr
Position: Full sun

Height: 50cm
Spread: 40cm

Sow Chilli Pepper seeds on the surface of a good free-draining damp seed sowing mix & cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place seed trays in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C until after germination which takes 7-10 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into individual 7.5cm pots of compost & grow on in cooler conditions. When plants are well grown & all risk of frost has passed transplant them into grow bags & containers or plant them in well prepared beds of fertile moist well drained soil. Chilli peppers may be grown undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel or grown outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun. When growing chilli peppers outdoors gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to transplanting them. Space pepper plants at a distance of 50cm apart.

Water chilli pepper plants regularly throughout the growing season & feed weekly with a high potash tomato fertiliser once the first fruits have set. Taller varieties of chilli peppers may require staking. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture & reduce weed growth. In greenhouses maintain high humidity by damping down paths daily. Harvest chillies singly by cutting them from the plant with secateurs or pull the entire plant when full of red peppers & hang upside down in the kitchen for use all year round. Chilli peppers grown outdoors must be harvested before the first frosts.
