Sow aubergine seeds from February to May for indoor cultivation or March to April for growing outdoors. Soaking them in warm water for 24 hours before sowing will assist germination.
Sow seeds on the surface of a free draining moist seed compost & cover with 6mm layer of vermiculite or compost. Place in a propagator or seal the container inside a polythene bag at constant temperature of 18-21C until after germination which takes 10-14 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle carefully transplant them into 7.5cm pots & grow on at a slightly reduced temperature.
When all risk of frost is passed & the soil is warm harden off & plant aubergines in their final positions. For indoor cultivation pot on into larger containers or plant 2 aubergines per growbag. Outdoors plant aubergines in rich fertile soil at a distance of 90cm apart in rows spaced 90-120cm apart. Grow aubergines in a sheltered position in full sun. Planting through black plastic mulch will help to warm the soil control weeds & save moisture.

Sow Chilli Pepper seeds on the surface of a good free-draining damp seed sowing mix & cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place seed trays in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C until after germination which takes 7-10 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination.
When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into individual 7.5cm pots of compost & grow on in cooler conditions. When plants are well grown & all risk of frost has passed transplant them into grow bags & containers or plant them in well prepared beds of fertile moist well drained soil. Chilli peppers may be grown undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel or grown outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun. When growing chilli peppers outdoors gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to transplanting them. Space pepper plants at a distance of 50cm apart.
Water chilli pepper plants regularly throughout the growing season & feed weekly with a high potash tomato fertiliser once the first fruits have set. Taller varieties of chilli peppers may require staking. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture & reduce weed growth. In greenhouses maintain high humidity by damping down paths daily. Harvest chillies singly by cutting them from the plant with secateurs or pull the entire plant when full of red peppers & hang upside down in the kitchen for use all year round. Chilli peppers grown outdoors must be harvested before the first frosts.

Sow dwarf bean seeds indoors from mid April for transplanting later on or direct sow outdoors from late May to July. Indoors sow bean seeds at a depth of 5cm in 7.5cm pots or trays of free-draining seed sowing compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 12-25C until germination which takes 7-10 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Once germinated grow on in cooler conditions until all risk of frost has passed & the dwarf French bean plants are large enough to be transplanted. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7
- 10 days before planting them outdoors in rich fertile well drained soil in full sun with protection from strong winds.
Alternatively direct sow dwarf green beans outdoors when the soil as warmed. Sow 2 bean seeds per station at a depth of 5cm & a distance of 23cm apart. Plant dwarf beans in rows that are 45cm apart.
When growing beans hoe between plants often & water regularly. Provide a compost mulch around the base of bean plants to combat dry periods. For the best crops harvest beans regularly while the pods are still young.
