Direct sow Sunflower seeds outdoors where they are to grow from April to May. Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm in drills spaced 45cm apart & cover seed with its own depth of soil to exclude light. Water the ground regularly especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes up to 21 days. When sunflower seedlings are large enough to handle thin them out to 30cm apart.

Alternatively sow indoors in individual 7.5cm pots from March to April at a temperature of 20-25C. Once germinated grow sunflower plants on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Feed & water sunflower plants regularly. Stake sunflower stems with tall canes to prevent wind damage.

Sow Sweet William seeds indoors or under glass from January to February as a late flowering annual or from June to July for flowering the following the spring. Sow on the surface of a good quality seed compost & gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20C or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 7
- 21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet & do not exclude light.

When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7.5cm pots & grow Sweet William plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7
- 10 days before planting outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Plant Sweet Williams at a distance of 30cm apart on any fertile well drained soil in full sun.

Feed & water Sweet William plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Sweet William flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
