Hedgehog numbers are sadly declining, but you can help by offering these friendly prickly animals with a safe & warm shelter to help raise their young, & to provide a safe home for hibernation. They really are a gardeners best friend, they love munching on slugs & snails & other pesky garden pests, so they are a great little resident if you want to protect your prized plants. This lovely little hedgehog house will take up very little space in your garden, looks cute, but more importantly will give them a great space with protection from the elements. In the wild they look for cover under brambles & shrubs & sadly wood piles that are being used for bonfires, offer them this safe alternative to raise their babies, & keep protected in their hibernation. Hedgehogs in the UK hibernate usually around November but our crazy weather can confuse them, but you can install a house for them any time of the year, they may use it for raising a family & will be used to it come winter time ready for their big sleep. The best way to encourage them is to leave out good quality cat or dog food & fresh water, & if you don't have any natural nesting material available in the garden, make them a comfortable bed with straw & leaves within the house. Try & place the house in a quiet part of the garden, one that offers coverage, somewhat protected from winds, & ideally NOT north facing. This house is just the right size for them to spend a cosy winter, with the perfect sized hedgehog door, just large enough for them to get in & out, but keeping larger predators out.
