At the end of their life cycle, skin cells reach the outermost layer of the epidermis, known as the Stratum Corneum, where they are naturally shed & replaced with new cells from below. In addition, these excess dead skin cells together with keratin (a natural skin protein) can accumulate in the hair follicle, forming a plug.
