The "tunica" was adopted by the Romans in the 3rd century BC & was based on a Greek design. It was made from wool & was worn in one form or another by all classes within Roman society. The level of decoration would normally indicate the status of the wearer. Plain tunics would be worn by soldiers, slaves & manual workers & would usually terminate a little above the knee. It was worn as a loose fitting garment (more like wearing a tent than a shirt) & was worn by both genders. Our Roman Tunic is based on an authentic period design & is made from thick wool. It is dyed red indicating that wearer would probably be a soldier (although soldiers were known to have worn a variety of colours including white). Key
