It's hard to believe that it's five years since Ye S first introduced the 420, & even after that amount of time it's pretty amazing how the 420 still has the power to blow the mind of anyone the rides it. Its combination of short but wide fish shape, Pow Rocker & super tight sidecut deliver a level of performance in the deep stuff that will make you rethink your whole riding.
So what is it that makes the 420 so special? Well to start, it's that shape. Taking its inspiration from the classic fish surfboard, the 420 gets its float from its wide profile nose shape & super wide riding platform. Add to this the pow rocker 6/0/2 profile that gives a long rocker in the nose & it's pretty obvious that even though the 420 is short, there's a lot of surface area there to keep the board on top of the snow. In fact the 148 has the equivalent surface area of a regular 158 board.
Being so wide you'd naturally think that the 420 would be a bit of a barge when you get out the pow, but in reality nothing could be further than the truth. In what can only be described as a stroke of genius, Ye S add a super tight sidecut to the board (5.94 m on the 148 & 6.1m on the 152). that just brings it alive. On-piste you can lay down the tightest carves putting the biggest grin on your face. Yes, we'll admit it's a bit scary on steep hardback but for what is fundamentally a powder board the 420 is an absolute revelation on the groomers.
Internally Ye S utilise some of the best materials available, heading this up is the Weightless Core. This superlight construction utilises standard poplar, lightweight low-density poplar & paulownia to create a responsive but featherweight core. To this, Ye S add structural layers formed from Tri-Ax glassfibre. This torsionally responsive glass resists twisting forces adding power & stability to the 420 & contributing to that totally stunning carving performance.
Finally, the 420 is finished off with a high-grade sintered base. This tough base material gives enhanced glide across a whole range of conditions as well as giving increased resistance to scrapes & knocks.
