THe POWDe R BOARD THAT STARTe D A Re VOLUTION This 420 is all about surface area displacement to create float & stability, which in layman’s terms means it’s about getting lift from width rather than from length. What this achieves is a stunning short powder board that has a massively reduced swing-weight. This low swing weight is then matched with a super tight radius sidecut to create a board that can turn on sixpence in even the deepest snow. Now that all sounds great in theory but how does that work in real life. Well, do one run on a 420, & it’s safe to say your world will change. This board is that good to ride! The float is effortless, & its uncanny ability to make you feel like a pro snowboarder will have you grinning from ear to ear within seconds. Shape Overview The 420 is inspired by surfboard shaper Steve Lis, & the 420 revolution that occurred when kneeboards influenced surfboard design. Working off the theory that riding Powder is all about flotation, it, therefore, makes sense that it’s the displacement of a board’s volume that is key rather than length. So, by punching out the waist width & drastically chopping the length, the 420 retains the surface area of a larger board, therefore displacing the same volume of snow for a much shorter length. The 148, for example, has the same circumference & base surface as a traditional 160, but as its mass is located much closer to your feet, it results in a far more manoeuvrable board. A light taper (12mm) helps keep the nose up without losing the tail’s ability to hold in hard-pack. Stance is only slightly set back from the centre of the effective edge because of the difference in nose & tail shovel. Profile The 420 utilises Ye S’s powder-specific Pow Rock profile. This features an extended rocker zone in the nose with a set-back flat area from just forward of the front insert pack. This combination gives impressive amounts of lift at the tip while providing the board with a dynamic & poppy overall ride. The short rocker zone in the reduced length tail helps the back of the board sink in the pow while still delivering great drive out the end of the turn. Construction Internally the 420 Powder Hull utilises Ye S’s Weightless core. This is the lightest core in the Yes range & strikes a critical balance between light weight & strength. Using a lower density species of Poplar in areas that are not as structural & Paulownia in the areas that are, Yes shave precious weight off the board. This helps it not only float but also “feel” floaty. To ensure that the 420 still has the response to deliver exceptional performance away from the pow, Ye S create the structural layers from torsionally stiff tri-ax glass. Base The 420 uses what we call Sintered Spec base material. This has the hardness & chemical properties, aswell as almost identical on-snow performance to that of a true sintered base, but is formed using the extrusion process. How? – Well, the raw material is actually pre-consumer recycled (meaning it never left the factory) sintered base material. So, while the heating & extrusion process has softened it slightly, it’s still much harder than true extruded.
