It's pretty safe to say that when Jones launched the original Hovercraft in 2010 it very quickly established itself a reputation for delivering truly mind blowing performance both in the pow & on the piste. This stunning ride was especially praiseworthy though as Jones deliberately made the Hovercraft a little bit softer than you would have thought, giving it more of a playful overall ride.
Now as the Hovercraft performed so well with this softer flex, there was always a feeling among certain riders that if you stiffened it up, added more power, it would be off the scale. Well, Jones did. & it is.
So the obvious bits first. 1: The Ultracraft shares the same for the directional long nose short tail shape as the original Hovercraft.
2: It also utilises the same directional rocker/ Camber base profile as the original Hovercraft. This combines longer extended rocker in the nose to give easier float, with an aggressive camber setback under the feet to give more drive & power to the edges & tail.
3: It also shares the same mellow Magne Traction sidecut as the original, so edge grip is enhanced without being overly hooky.
4: Again as per the standard board it also features the new Spooned tip & tail shape. This innovative 3-D base profile adds a 7 mm spoon on the nose & a 4 mm spoon on the tail giving extra float at the front but equally as important it also allows the board to roll into the turn making carving more fluent & effortless. Ê But that's where the similarities end.
So now we get to the juicy bits & the bits that step things up over the standard board. First up is the Master Core. This combines dual density poplar with lightweight Paulownia which both reduces weight & adds extra life to the board. Next up the structural layers, in the standard Hovercraft these are formed from softer Bi-Ax glass, whereas on the Ultracraft they are torsionally stiffer Tri-Ax. In addition pre-cured the Basalt Stringers transfer power from under the feet & out to the contact points. These reduce chatter but more importantly engage the edges faster & more securely.
Finally the base steps up several levels to a 9900 Sintered as opposed to the standard boards 7000 Sintered. The higher grade base is both faster & tougher.
