I do absolutely love the Volkl Gotama ski, & this is the basis of the Nunataq, the same basic geometry with a flat tail for easier ascending & skin fitting. This is incredibly light weight considering the generous width of the ski, thanks to the clever mutli-core construction which appears to have further lightweight material meshed through the wood to add torsional stability. The result is the ride quality of the Volkl Gotama, but without the super-stiff feel that the Gotama’s carbon fibre adds. This makes it a perfect ski for me, as I still want to be able to push on despite my dodgy knees. The Nunataq floats like a barge in powder with superb control, & on the piste you are still able to make beautiful wide arc carving turns thanks the sidewall construction. I was totally surprised by this ski having neglected it before as it is in Volkl’s touring category, & for that it is superb, but it should also be considered for the freeride skier that wants a bit more compliance, & a very light weight package. IS IT FOR ME? For the true freeride skier who wants a no-compromise fully rockered freeride ski, but with full touring capability, all wrapped in Volkl’s legendary build quality & with typical Volkl edge hold & performance.
