Solid construction methods such as the hardened Snag Free base material & Armadillo Plates are signs that Stepchild takes board manufacture & durability seriously. It’s about the only thing they do take seriously, however the 2 year warranty on defects in materials & craftsmanship backs this up. The Dirtbag is low-cost but it isn’t ‘cheap’. Low key graphics & simple (yet solid) construction keep the costs down so If you’re looking for a low cost board then you can’t do better than getting one made by a true ‘by snowboarders for snowboards’ brand like Stepchild. Specifically chosen to allow for more torsional flex Biax Fibreglass is made up of interweaving vertical & horizontal fibreglass stands. I like the approach taken by Stepchild. They definitely have a focus on fun & don’t take themselves too seriously. They make simple boards, that are well built (in Austria), at a price that means you still have some change for a lift ticket & maybe even enough to pay your rent. The zero camber profile makes the board extremely forgiving as well as incredibly agile. It turns on a six-pence & is a dream when it comes to butters & presses. You can’t help but have fun spinning, sliding & jumping every hit in sight. Is it for me? The flat profile & low flex rating makes for a pretty soft ride. If you prefer buttering around the resort & hitting rails in the park than charging everything at mach-10 speed then the Dirtbag is the board for you. It would make a fine board for both indoor & dry slopes
- handy for us British snowboarders & has such a favourable fun-to-price ratio that you should probably have one in your quiver anyway.

The latchkey had one of the best reactions from all the boards we tested this year. Despite its simple construction it just feels good, really good. Classed as a freestyle board based on its twin shape & forgiving flex, the Latchkey will suit beginner & intermediate resort riders who will appreciate how forgiving it is & how much there is to be had riding it. Is it for me? If you’re a freestyle rider that likes the ‘looser’ feel of rocker then the Latchkey offers what you need at a great price. Likewise the Latchkey is progression friendly so if you’re fairly new to snowboarding then mastering those turns & riding switch couldn’t be easier. It has enough versatility to take you through the park & the occasional powder day.

I’ve got a Sucks from a couple of seasons ago & it’s still my go-to board for park days. I like the precision of camber when approaching rails & setting an edge on landing. The Triax fibreglass update has increased the torsion stiffness a little, giving more power off the edges when it’s ridden a little harder. I enjoy all aspects of snowboarding & carving corduroy piste is up there with my favourite things to do. That is another thing that the Sucks definitely does NOT suck at. Is it for me? For intermediate to advanced park riders that want the benefits of camber: solid edge hold & loads of pop, & don’t want to sacrifice that for the looseness of a rocker or flat profile. Also snowboarders that enjoy riding the piste that are looking for the same characteristics.
