If versatility counts as much as fast edge switches on prepared terrain & soft snow, then the ski has to deliver the right level of performance. Like the Kendo: if versatility counts as much as fast edge switches on prepared terrain & soft snow, then the ski has to deliver the right level of performance. Then titanal reinforced Kenja with tip rocker cruises with tremendous dynamic energy on hard snow but is wide enough to point its tips off-piste as well.  Völkl’s longest-running construction, Power Construction utilizes traditional vertical sidewalls & a torsion box internal layup. Used in racing skis as well as all the freeskiing models, this versatile, proven construction provides tremendous grip, stability, & a smooth ride. The top-of-the-line models in the V-LKL Alpine ski range boast a special wood core tuning system
- all powered by titanium. There is a layer of titanium reinforcing the ski & adding power & stability. The thin yet extremely strong aluminium alloy extends its unparalleled dampening properties particularly at high speeds. Völkl freeskiing models feature a multi-layer wood core with two different densities of wood. In the binding attachment area, a dense, ash core is used, while in the rest of the ski, the core is poplar. The more dense wood creates secure screw retention & stability, while the softer poplar section allows for resilience & snap. The flex pattern can be tailored to each ski model to match the desired performance characteristics. Ski

The edge hold is very positive on hardpack & the tip rockcer shape give the ski superb versatility. Is this for me? This is aimed at the advanced skier that is spending 80% of their time on the piste but likes to hop off the sides when the mode strikes. It is a very planted, stable & powerful ski that offers amazing performance levels at all speeds thanks to the titanium inside. This ski will go nicely with a Marker Griffon on it.     SKI BINDING ADVICE: You will need a minimum 90mm brake width for this ski. You could go for a Marker Squire for lighter skiers or the Marker Griffon. You can always go wider for your brakes but dont be tempted to go narrower. View our bindings department.

The Volkl Ledge is a park & pipe specific symmetrical ski with a slightly softer full woodcore ready for switch skiing, with added tip & tail rocker. The special symmetrical sidecut is tailored especially for park & pipe, but with the addition of a little tip & tail rocker to help with transitions, especially when skiing switch. This is almost identical to the popular Volkl Step ski, but has had the core softened just a little to make it ideal for someone wanting to hone their switch ski skills, feeding into & out of tricks just a little easier with no loss of performance. That also makes this ideal for the lighter freestyle skier looking for a symmetrical ski. Being a Volkl, & with Tough Box Construction & a traditional sidewall, durability & edge hold is a given! Although optimised as a Park & Pipe Freestyle ski, the tip & tail rocker means that the Volkl Ledge 2014 skis can be used in variable conditions across the mountain. FEATURES & BENEFITS Multi-Layer Wood Core  – Lightweight with superb rebound for pop & for big jumps & drops Traditional full camber with a tip & tail rocker for versatility Toughbox Construction – For durability & a solid core of the ski with traditional sidewall construction

For the park & pipe freestyle skier wanting a planted & easier to ski freestyle ski to help them develop their switch skiing technique & tricks library, which performs at a high level, & yet offer some versatility so it can be used across the mountain. Would also suit someone who is in the park & wants their first dedicated freestyle skis. A great park ski for lighter skiers & those looking to build their tricks & skill levels, as the slightly lighter core, & the tip & tail rocker help between transitions. Volkl’s jack-of-all-trades is back for another season! A freeride best seller which sticks with a traditional camber with a tip rocker for a superb blend of edge hold & float. The success streak of the Volkl Mantra is unbroken, & for good reason with a perfect blend of traditional camber, a tip rocker & 98mm width underfoot. Don’t let the width fool you, this ski is actually extremely adept on the piste, with superb edge hold supplied by a traditional sidewall, & a Titanal laminate showing this skis true leanings to high speed sweeping all conditions piste turns, with so much left to spare for fast skiing in soft powder too. A Power Construction, combining the titanium material with a full multi-layered wood core, means this ski is has the liveliness of a piste carver but with the versatility of an all-mountain ski FEATURES & BENEFITS Traditional camber for carving, with a tip rocker for float in soft snow Multi-Layer Wood Core  – Lightweight with superb rebound for pop out of turns & from big jumps & drops Powered By Titanium – A Titanal laminate top sheet for faster rebound & less torsional twisting

With the development of full rocker skis & widths increasing further, the Mantra has almost re-invented itself without having to do anything; it is superb when pushed hard on piste, & carves sweeping turns amazingly well, in any kind of snow conditions, & yes it is also adept off the sides in fresh powder, adding a zesty speed to your turns rather than a ‘barge’ feel. So for me personally I think this is a superb all conditions piste ski that is also fantastic off piste, rather than, when it first arrived, & off piste ski that can carve. Either way – It works! This year’s graphic is very nice too, with a very deep red replacing samurai’s & wolves. I like it, a lot! IS IT FOR ME? For the all mountain skier who doesn’t want to compromise too much on carving ability on the pistes, & wants a powerful & stiffer all mountain ski

Is it possible to improve what is arguably the world’s best all-mountain freerider? The answer is YES! But you can’t hit that goal without making some changes. A redesign is required. So the Mantra now comes with a new shape, full rocker design, directional but moderate taper construction & little more width than its predecessors. The only element that remains is the titanium structure for maximum power transfer. The result is a Mantra ready for a universal range of challenges, crisper & more direct than ever on the groomed terrain & even more playful & powerful off of it. Völkl’s longest-running construction, Power Construction utilizes traditional vertical sidewalls & a torsion box internal layup. But WOW it must have taken five turns & I was sold! This ski has a total new lease of life, it totally rails on long & short radius turns & will be fun to ride in pretty much any condition. I would say it should feature in every man’s quiver but it would render everything else useless! Is this for me? A true full rocker freerider measuring 96mm underfoot & yet light & agile, with an extremely stable Tough Box Construction optimised to the needs of the freeride touring skier. Based on the best-selling Volkl Mantra profile, with a flatter tail for easier skin application & for a more planted tail when traversing or in uphill mode. Being a Volkl, & with Tough Box Construction & a traditional sidewall, durability & edge hold is a given! Slightly narrower than the Volkl Nunataq, this ski will suit all-mountain freeride skiers who are making steps into the back country but have a ski that can still tear up the piste when needed. It also has a slightly reduced turn radius for manoeuvrability when making headway to the next powder bowl via the pisted runs. FEATURES & BENEFITS Based on the awesome Volkl Mantra all-mountain ski, removing the titanal metal layer results in an incredibly smooth & agile ski for the explorer Multi-Layer Wood Core Light – Super lightweight with a progressive flex for a smoother ride Tough Box Construction for durability despite light weight & amazing edge hold Features Volkls Skin Pin system, so you can run Volkls dedicated skins or your own

Specification Sidecut:  131mm-96mm-114mm Radius: 22.4 Metres (170cm length) 24.6 Metres (177cm Length) 26.2 Metres (184cm Length) Base Profile: Full Rocker Ski Core: Multi-Layer Wood Core Light Bindings:  Not Included – Pair with a Marker F10 or F12 EPF binding or similar for total versatility SKI PROFILE Snow Conditions: All-Conditions, Powder, Tracked Out Runs Ski Terrain: Piste, All-Mountain, Off-Piste, Touring Skier Level: Strong Intermediates, Advanced, Expert, Professional This & the Nunataq were the surprise & standout skis for me of this years test, & I would not even classify myself as a touring skier. The Volkl Mantra on which it is based is a firm favourite here at Edge & Wax, & this is the basis of the Nanuq, the same basic geometry with a flat tail for easier ascending & skin fitting. This is incredibly light weight thanks to the clever multi-core construction which appears to have further lightweight material meshed through the wood to add torsional stability. The result is the ride quality of the Volkl Mantra, but without the super-stiff feel that the Mantra’s Titanal top sheet layer adds. This makes it a perfect ski for me, as I still want to be able to push on despite my dodgy knees. The Nanuq floats in all conditions, & on the piste you are still able to make controlled carving turns thanks the sidewall construction. I was totally surprised by this ski having neglected it before as it is in Volkl’s touring category, & for that it is superb, but it should also be considered for the freeride skier that wants a bit more compliance, & a very light weight package. IS IT FOR ME? For the all-mountain skier who wants a versatile & light weight fully rockered freeride ski, but with full touring capability, all wrapped in Volkl’s legendary build quality & with typical Volkl edge hold & performance.
