This fantastic image, painted in 1533 by Hans Holbein the Younger, is from The National Gallery. s collection. The scene memorialises two wealthy, educated & powerful young men, who are depicted with some of their most valued possessions. Rather than the fast cars, iphones & designer brands of today, we can see books, a celestial globe, portable sundial & other artefacts demonstrating their standing in the world. Many of the items have been interpreted as references to contemporary religious divisions, whilst the distorted image of a skull in the foreground is a symbol of mortality. When viewed from a point to the right of the original painting, the distortion is corrected.
