Develop a naming scheme for your scanned images & stick with it. Use a photo management program like Picasa or Lightroom to manage your scans. Scan at 3600 dpi. You dont need to go higher than that unless you are going to create 16x 20" prints or larger. Choose the correct film brand & type in your scanning program. This helps the automatic settings get a decent scan. If you have an underexposed negative, scan it using the Multiple Exposure feature of your scanner. This will open up shadow detail. Post scan sharpening in Photoshop, Elements, GIMP or other photo editing program will help sharpen a scanned image that looks fuzzy. Try 150% with a 2 pixel radius. This is magic sometimes! Try to get the best image possible in the scanning program but then do your final editing in a program designed for photo editing (see above). The scanning program uses raw pixels from the sensor so you have the most latitude for adjustment. However, scanning programs are not the best photo editors. Use Infrared dust & scratch removal when you need it. Just be aware the IR dust & scratch removal doesnt work on silver halide based black & white film. Also be aware that IR dust & scratch removal requires the scanner to make an extra scan pass & increases your overall scan time. However, this extra time can be a time saver if you have dirty or damaged film. Dont forget that you can use a photo editor to do dust & scratch removal or touch up. ...
