Tap water is treated with a large number of chemicals in order to kill bacteria & other microorganisms. In addition, it may contain other undesirable contaminants like toxic metal salts, hormones & pesticides, or it may become contaminated by chemicals or microbes within pipes (e.g. lead, bacteria, protozoa). Activated carbon filters remove or reduce many volatile organic chemicals (VOC), pesticides & herbicides, as well as benzene, chlorine (including cancer-causing by-product trihalomethanes), radon, solvents & hundreds of other man-made chemicals found in tap water. Activated carbon filters are usually rated by the size of the particles they are able to remove, measured in microns, & generally range from 50 microns (least effective) down to 0.5 microns (most effective). How does the filter work? What is inside the filter: Carbon is the primary substance used in the water filter because activated carbon has the potential to adsorb many of the chemicals found in water. The most common carbon types used in water filtration are bituminous, wood & coconut shell carbons. How it Works There are two principal mechanisms by which activated carbon remove contaminants from water: adsorption & catalytic reduction. Adsorption: involves the accumulation of molecules on the surface of the activated carbon (organic compounds). Catalytic reduction: involves the attraction of negatively-charged contaminant ions to the positively-charged activated carbon (residual disinfectants such as chlorine). These tiny holes allow liquids or gases to pass through the charcoal & interact with the exposed carbon. Because adsorption works by chemically binding the impurities to the carbon, the active sites in the charcoal eventually become filled. The two most important factors affecting the efficiency of activated carbon filtration are the amount of carbon in the unit & the amount of time the contaminant spends in contact with it. Particle size also affects removal rates. Thus, filtration efficiency declines with time, & bacteria accumulate in the filter carbon. If the filter is not replaced regularly, the bacteria may become present in the water. It is recommended to change the water filter every 6 months. Over time activated carbon becomes filled with debris & no more contaminants can be adsorbed. Therefore, it is important to change the water filter every six months (unless otherwise stated) to ensure proper filtration at all times. Not changing the filter may allow contaminants & bacteria penetrate into your drinking water.
