Taylor's is one of the few remaining houses that still make a 40 year old port. After each vintage, a reserve of very concentrated & powerful red ports are laid to one side to age in oak casks. Those that have reached their peak after forty years are then blended together for balance & finesse & to ensure consistency of quality & style. The Grapes used for the 40 year old are grown on Taylor's own properties & consist of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cao & Tinta Amarela. Only very small quantities of this wine are made each year & after decades of evaporating & ageing in wood, the wine is concentrated to almost an essence. This produces intense & complex nutty, spicy aromas with a dense & concentrated palate, full of rich mellow flavour. This is a sublime port of very great age which still has the old olive-gold hue of its many years in casks. Decades of evaporation have concentrated this astonishing wine to an exceptional density, with a powerful aroma of honey dried fruit & spice. Impressions of nutmeg, roasted coffee & an intense nuttiness converge both in the bouquet & on the palate. The ports rich, intense, voluptuous, almost viscous texture culminates in a finish of incredible length.
