Dewar's origins date back to the mid-19th century. John Dewar was born in 1805 in the small village of Dull, near Aberfeldy, Scotland where he grew up on a farm. he was a highly educated man & after working as an apprentice as a joiner, he moved in his early 20's to Perth, where he began working for his uncle's Wine & spirits wholesaling firm. In 1837 he became a partner & begun to understand the alcohol business & in 1846 he broke away from his uncle & decided to go into business on his own, blending whisky from several different producers to give it a mellower flavour. He did however keep in good contact with his uncle & Dewar's was one of the first companies to sell his beverage in a glass bottle with the brand name embossed on the front, rather than the traditional way in a ceramic container. In 1880 John Dewar Senior passed away & was succeeded by his sons John & Tommy Alexander. It was Tommy who build the brand name of Dewars to be known world wide. His extrovert nature & showman skills were the real reason why the Dewars brand name got recognition, & in 1894 his enterprise has established 32 agents in no fewer than 26 countries. By this time, the firm has built a new headquarters next to the railway station in Perth from which a private siding led to their premises. Accordingly, Aberfeldy Distillery was also built next to the railway. The Aberfeldy Distillery has gone through many hard times, for example during the First & Second World War it was forced to shut down because the demand for barley increased to help produce food for the soldiers. After the World Wars, business picked up again but it wasn't until 1999 that the distillery hit a gold mine; they created the Aberfeldy 12yo single malt whisky. Since then this fabulous single malt has won many awards including two gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition in 2007. ...

James Fleming was the founder of the Aberlour Distillery. Son to a local tenant farmer, James decided to become a grain dealer with many whiskey distillers as his customers. Through this he then decided to distil his own whiskey & acquired the land at Aberlour with its priceless water. He set it up in 1879 & within a year he had his first drops of whisky. Now the distillery produces 3.2 million litres of alcohol each year. The water used to make Aberlour is one of the most important ingredients. The crystal clear spring water that cascades down the slopes of Ben Rinnes, & makes its way from there along the lour valley to the distillery, it is the lifeblood of Aberlour Malt Whisky. It is during the maturation process that the developing whisky takes on its individual characteristics. Much of this is determined on how long the whiskey is allowed to mature & the type of cask used. Most Aberlour's go through double maturation in both ex bourbon cask & ex sherry butts, after being matured it is time for ageing the whisky.
