The Bestlite BL7 wall light is a simple minimalistic design suitable for both traditional & contemporary interiors including both contract & home decor. The light features a chrome arm & a adjustable lamp shade & backplate with a power switch, the light comes in a choice of 3 colours all in a powder coated finish matt black, matt cream or glossy white. This wall lamp makes an excellent bedside / reading light as well as a wall light for directing light on to surfaces. the light comes with 2 electrical options it can be hard wired through the wall or it comes with a wire & plug which can be put in to the mains socket. It can also be switched which means rather than get out of bed to turn off the light, you can just change the switch on the light. This BL7 light is one form of the Betslite range which was originally designed in the 1930s in Birmingham, the light went on to become a design classic & was one of the first products to influence the Bauhaus movement in the UK. it gained great notoriety when it was pictured with Prime minister Winston Churchill on his desk in his air raid shelter during the 2nd world war. Designed by Robert Dudley Best in 1930, the Bestlite BL9M Pendant is part of the UK’s unique contribution to the Bauhaus movement & is still made in Birmingham. The BL9M has a shade of powder painted steel in matt white, grey or black. The fittings can be ordered in either brass or chrome & the units have 250 cm of fabric cord in either black or white. The shade is 25 cm high & has a diameter of 21 cm. It weighs a fraction over 0.5 kg. This pendant shade looks impressive & means business – design features that would eventually influence its fascinating history. Heir to a large lighting factory in the Midlands, Best first came under the influence of Les Corbusier & Miles van der Rohe at the Paris Design Expo during a cultural visit in the late twenties. Transformed by the experience he eventually convinced his reluctant father to put his own Bauhaus influenced designs into production. The results were commercially disastrous & bankruptcy seemed inevitable – until Winston Churchill, impressed by their style & utilitarianism, installed a Bestlite in his war-time cabinet. A favourite among designers, architects & design aficionados for its remarkable pedigree & iconic, industrial style, the BL9M is on permanent display in the V&A & the Design Museum in London.
