At Orange Bikes its all about the ride & weve made substantial improvements to our e-bike chassis which deliver the most engaging trail feel The 170mm travel Surge will take on the biggest terrain & is not shy when is comes to sending those gaps. E-bikes can be a devisive topic but once you are bitten by the bug they are hard to resist. The Surge 29 takes many of its traits from the new Stage 6 64° head angle 76° seat angle reduced offset fork increased reach & a metric shock but it also incorporates Shimano’s newest battery technology – 8035. The revised battery has meant that we are now able to considerably reduce the size of the down tube add an On/ Off switch to the top tube & the battery is now removable without a key. With 29” wheels 160mm travel at the front & 150mm at the rear this bike is prepared to go wherever you are willing to take it. CONSTRUCTION Something that was painstakingly pored over was the suspension characteristic of the new Alpine 6 with everything we gained from that bike we wanted it to translate across into the Surge. Revisions have been made to the shock mounts to accommodate the new metric rear shock (230x 65) & the increase in travel from 160 to 165mm we have also focussed on increasing the amount of progression in the system which has seen a substantial increase reduced the bikes anti-squat value & decreased the amount of pedal kickback in the system. The Surge’s revised construction & shape is one of the biggest leaps forward over its predecessor revisions to the front triangle in both construction & tubing profile have helped improve the bikes stiffness while still remaining compliant enough that the bike isn’t harsh the new down tube is substantially slimmer & has a much more organic profile that the one that went before it. While the rear swingarm has taken cues from our 327 DH bike in its profile this has been done to help deal with the large amounts of torque being produced by the motor the additional overall weight of the bike & the fact that this bike acts like your own personal uplift vehicle where descents are the order of the day. The final piece of the puzzle was to have a battery that was easily removable. Hearing of riders doing “double battery rides” is very much a reality & we wanted a system that allowed this to happen as easily as possible. The battery is now removable with the use of just a key so there are no more bolts to undo & it should take a matter of seconds to swap. Second batteries will be available from Orange & will come with the protective cover as standard. THE DRIVE UNIT Weve chosen to work with Shimano using the E8000 pedal assist system. The features it offers work extremely well for us. Due to the size of the drive unit no change to bike geometry is necessary. The E-bike you see here is the exact same geometry as our Alpine 6 model. The power is delivered when the rider starts pedalling. Weve found with the Shimano E8000 unit the power is smooth & controllable even in boost mode. This is crucial on the technical terrain we love to ride. Unlike other drive units on the market the Shimano E8000 crankset has the same Q-factor as the human powered cranks you are used to this means no awkward changes to your pedalling position. This drive unit also has a zero-drag feature so as you surge past the assisted power often into descents all of your pedal input goes into the drive rather than dragging the motors gearbox. This gives a really responsive feel when youre hitting those high-velocity descents. You soon forget youre riding an E-bike until the assist kicks in again to help power you up the next climb. The Switch 7 – the Need for Speed Enter the Switch 7 taking its name from our fun popular MX wheeled Switch 6 but going bigger faster & harder this bike is taking things a little more seriously. The aim with the Switch 7 was to produce a race bike to take everything we already knew with the addition of feedback from supported EWS racers & the newly established factory racing program & combine that to make a bike thats even more capable of competing at the sharp end of races on the toughest tracks in the world. The Switch 7 is a true representation of Orange Bikes’ capabilities in frame development & production. The frame & each individual component have seen extensive FEA analysis & 3D modelling to identify any potential issues & to optimise each structure to perform at its best. Of course we back all of this up with real-world prototype testing & have clocked up the miles amongst the test team Factory Racing team & a few riders who are known for being hard on bikes validating the computer analysis & giving us the confidence in the design. FEA has been used for for both deflection & fatigue to fine tune the frames elements for strength & optimal compliance. Although the frame silhouette is still very intentionally that of an Orange a great deal has changed but also much remains the same. This is a completely UK made frame manufactured by the hands of craftsmen with decades of experience from flat sheets of aerospace grade aluminium to individually custom-fabricated tubes seam-welded for each specific purpose working in harmony with CNCed components from aluminium billet meticulously modelled & analysed. This all produces an aluminium frame with a weight less than that of many ‘carbon’ frames in its category. It also means we have a product thats strong durable & fully recyclable at the end-of-life cycle.
