An incandescent light bulb & a metal wire warm up a glass bottle that contains water & a translucent wax inside. In order to create that flowing lava effect, the wax in the lamp must be denser than water at room temperature yet thinner than water when it heats up. Wax & water don't mix, that's why they remain separated & create this volcanic lava effect. Designer's Bio Ross Lovegrove is an industrial designer who achieved international renown for his work in developing the Sony Walkman. He studied at London's Royal College of Art & majored in design. He's worked on projects for Apple Computers, Airbus Industries, Peugeot, Olympus & Japan Airlines, among others. He was behind the successful Alessandri office system & has won numerous international design awards: the World Technology Award, sponsored by Time Magazine & CNN & the Red Dot Design Award, in recognition of the products he created for Vitr A.
