The preferred form of power circuits is relay cards. They are very flexible in their choice of the voltage levels & can also be used for higher current levels of up to 1 A or more. Optocoupler cards are used where electrical insulation between two power circuits is useful or necessary (for example, in the control & power unit or during data transfer over great distances to prevent errors). If a special driver is not fitted, they can only be used for low current loads. An optocoupler card that records external switching events precisely & quickly is the best approach. The card outputs are controlled using software. If a relay is addressed, the contact is either opened or closed. It should be ensured that the switched current is not excessive otherwise the relay's switching contacts may be overloaded. Each relay has two of its own connections such that voltages with different potentials can be switched & DC voltage can be switched. Unlike the relay, the controlling signal for optocouplers is light. Optocouplers can only switch DC or record DC processes (opto outputs & opto inputs), but are characterised by high switching speeds & a relatively wide voltage range. ...
