Canesten Combi is a complete thrush treatment because it contains:a soothing cream to start relieving the itch immediately, a pessary for insertion into the vagina for treatment at the site of infection.   For women who have previously been diagnosed as suffering from vaginal thrush   Vaginal thrush is a common infection that most women have some time in their lives & is not caused by a lack of personal hygiene.   Thrush is caused by a yeast (fungus) called candida which may live harmlessly in the vagina without you even noticing it. However, the natural p H balance of the vagina that keeps candida under control can be upset by many factors such as perfumed soaps, hormonal changes (menstruation, contraceptive pill, pregnancy, menopause), poor health, antibiotics, bath additives & tight clothing.   If the natural p H balance is altered the level of yeast increases & can develop into a thrush infection causing any of the following symptoms: persistent burning itching around the vagina & vulva, redness, swelling & soreness of the tissues of the vagina & vulva & a whitish, odourless discharge from the vagina.   If your discharge is green coloured, and/or foul smelling consult your doctor as you may have another type of infection which can be effectively treated with a different medicine.   What does Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream contain? The pessary contains 500mg of the active ingredient clotrimazole.   Other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, lactic acid, maize starch, povidone, calcium lactate pentahydrate, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide & hypromellose.   The 10g tube of cream contains 2% w/w clotrimazole.   Other ingredients are sorbitan stearate, polysorbate 60, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol, benzyl alcohol, & purified water.   Clotrimazole is an antifungal agent which fights the cause of infections such as thrush.   What is Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream?   Canesten Combi is a complete thrush treatment because it contains: a soothing cream to start relieving the itch immediately. a pessary for insertion into the vagina for treatment at the site of infection. The pessary also contains an ingredient that helps restore the vaginas p H balance. When not to use Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream Only use Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream if you have been previously diagnosed by your doctor as having vaginal thrush.   Do not use the pessary or cream if you have previously had an allergic reaction to the active ingredient, clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients in the product. If you are unsure about this, ask your doctor.   You must consult your doctor as soon as possible & do not use the pessary   irregular vaginal bleeding   abnormal vaginal bleeding or a blood stained discharge   ulcers, blisters or sores of the vagina or vulva   lower abdominal pain   pain or difficulty in passing urine   fever or chills   feeling sick or vomiting   diarrhoea   redness, irritation or swelling associated with treatment   This is because Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream may not be the right treatment for you   If you are unsure whether you have thrush, check with your doctor before using Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream   Do not use this product to treat nail or scalp infections   Before using the pessary or cream, you should see your doctor if: you have had more than two infections of thrush in the last six months you or your partner have ever had a sexually transmitted disease you are aged under 16 or over 60 years you have ever had an allergic reaction to Canesten or any other vaginal antifungal products As with other creams & pessaries, this product may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms, when used together. Consequently, you should use alternative precautions for at least five days after using this product.   This product contains cetostearyl alcohol which may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).   What special precautions should be taken? If you are pregnant or are trying for a baby, tell your doctor before using Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream. If you have informed our doctor already, follow his/her instructions carefully. During pregnancy, extra care should be taken when using he applicator.   As with other creams & pessaries, this product may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms diaphragms, when used together. Consequently, you should use alternative Precautions for at least five days after using this product.   When & how to use Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream Canesten Combi Pessary & Cream is for women who have suffered from vaginal thrush before.   The full course of treatment consists of a Canesten pessary held inside a foil blister pack, an applicator for insertion of the pessary into the vagina & a tube of cream.   The pessary The applicator should be used to insert the pessary into the vagina preferably before going to sleep at night   Remove the applicator from the packaging. Pull out the plunger until it stops.   Remove the pessary from the blister pack & place firmly into the applicator.   To fit the pessary into the applicator, the holder of the applicator needs to be squeezed lightly at either side.     The pessary fits tightly into the applicator & needs to be squeezed into the holder to about 1cm     Carefully put the applicator as deep as is comfortable into the vagina (this is easiest when lying on your back with your knees bent up).   Holding the applicator in place, slowly press the plunger until it stops so that the pessary is deposited into the vagina   Remove the applicator.   Dispose of the applicator in a safe place, out of the reach of children.   The applicator cannot be flushed down the toilet.   Since the pessary dissolves in the vagina, it may be helpful to wear a panty liner because it is quite common to notice a slight white residue (chalky) after using the pessary. This does not mean that the treatment has not worked.   The cream For the treatment of the itching & soreness (vulvitis), the cream should be thinly & evenly applied to the area around the entrance of the vagina, 2 or 3 times a day & smoothed in gently.   The symptoms of thrush should disappear within three days of treatment. If no improvement is seen after seven days you must tell your doctor.   Do not use this product more than 3 times before consulting a doctor   The pessary should be used in the vagina only. The cream is for external use only. Do not put the pessary or cream in your mouth or swallow them. If the pessary or cream are swallowed accidentally, tell your doctor straight away or contact the Accident & Emergency Department of your nearest hospital.   Side- effects: Rarely, the pessary or cream may cause side-effects in some people. The side-effects are very similar to the symptoms of thrush. If the redness, burning, irritation or swelling get worse, see your doctor as soon as possible.   As with all medicines, some people may be allergic to the pessary or cream. If you are allergic to the pessary or cream a reaction will occur soon after you start using them. An allergic reaction may appear as a rash, itching, nausea, faintness or facial swelling. If you experience any of these effects, tell your doctor immediately.   ...

Canesten Cream (Clotrimazole 1%) For Fungal Infections & Nappy Rash 20g   Canesten 1% cream contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which is an antifungal medicine used to treat infections with fungi & yeasts. (NB. Clotrimazole 1% cream is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.) Clotrimazole kills fungi & yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol causes holes to appear in the fungal cell membrane. The cell membranes of fungi are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from entering the cells & stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. As clotrimazole causes holes to appear in the cell membranes, essential constituents of the fungal cells can leak out. This kills the fungi & treats the infection. Canesten 1% cream is used to treat a wide range of skin infections caused by fungi. These include infections with dermatophytes such as tinea, eg ringworm (tinea corporis), athletes foot (tinea pedis), & jock itch (tinea cruris) & infections with yeasts such as candida, eg fungal nappy rash, sweat rash, or thrush affecting the outside of the vagina (vulva & labia) or the end of the penis. Canesten cream should be applied to the affected area (s) of skin thinly two to three times daily & rubbed in gently. Treatment should be continued for at least one month for dermatophyte infections & at least two weeks for candidal infections. Ask your pharmacist for further advice on treating your particular infection. If you are using Canesten cream to treat athletes foot you should make sure you wash & dry the feet, especially between the toes, before applying the cream. You may also want to use Canesten powder inside your socks & shoes to help treat the infection & prevent it coming back. If you are using Canesten 1% cream to treat vaginal thrush it will only relieve the external symptoms of the infection, such as itching, inflammation & soreness. It wont treat infection inside your vagina, & so should be used in combination with a thrush treatment that does, for example clotrimazole pessaries or cream that are inserted into the vagina, or an antifungal medicine taken by mouth. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise you about which products to use. What is it used for? Skin infections caused by yeasts (eg Candida), dermatophytes (eg Trichophyton), moulds & other fungi, such as the following: Athletes foot (tinea pedis). Fungal infection of the groin, ie jock itch (tinea cruris). Ringworm (tinea corporis). Fungal nappy rash caused by infection with Candida albicans. Sweat rash caused by infection with Candida albicans. Relieving the external symptoms (candidal vulvitis) of vaginal thrush (candidal vaginitis). (This cream should be used in combination with another medicine that treats the infection inside your vagina
- ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice about which products to use.) Inflammation of the penis and/or foreskin (candidal balanitis) caused by infection with Candida albicans (also known as thrush).
