How does it work? This medicine contains omega-3-acid ethyl esters, comprising of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) & docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are more commonly known as omega-3 fatty acids & are also found in oily fish. The medicine also contains alpha-tocopherol, otherwise known as vitamin E. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, which means they need to be obtained in the diet because the body cannot produce them. They have been shown to have various protective effects on the heart & blood circulation. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the production of bad fats, called triglycerides, in the liver. High levels of triglycerides can cause heart disease & inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease the production of a substance called thromboxane, which is one of the chemicals that causes platelets to clump together & start off the process of blood-clotting. Reducing its production therefore reduces the likelihood of clots forming within the blood vessels, which is what can cause heart attacks. This medicine has been shown to reduce the risk of further heart attacks & improve overall survival in people who have had a heart attack. It is used in combination with standard post-heart attack medicines, such as aspirin, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors & cholesterol-lowering medicines (statins). This medicine is also used to treat high blood triglyceride levels when changes to the diet have been insufficient to acheive this. What is it used for? Raised triglyceride levels in the blood (hypertriglyceridaemia) Reducing risk of further heart attacks & improving general survival following a heart attack Warning! There is insufficient information regarding the safety & efficacy of this medicine in children. It is not recommended for children. People with liver diseases should have their liver function monitored regularly while taking this medicine. Use with caution in Decreased liver function People at risk of bleeding due to surgery, injury or disease People taking medicine to prevent blood clotting (anticoagulants, eg warfarin) Not to be used in Allergy to any ingredient This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. Omron Body Composition Monitor BF508

The Omron BF508 Body Fat Monitor features: - Body fat and classification - BMI and classification - Visceral fat and classification - Clinically validated - 4 user memory - 8 sensor technology - Age range 18-80 years - Batteries included Why choose a Body Composition Monitor? The Omron BF508 Body Composition Monitor offers you much more than a traditional weighing scale. While it is important to monitor your weight, there are other internal factors that give you a better idea of your overall health. Using its sensor technology the BF508 will give you accurate readings for your body fat percentage and visceral fat level. The BF508 is simple to use and offers accurate results, making it a perfect fitness tool to use any time in the comfort of your own home. Chewing the fat--what you need
to know What is body fat? Our bodies need a certain amount of fat to function effectively but too much fat can have a detrimental effect to your overall health. Studies have shown that a high level of fat in the body, in particular visceral fat, increases the risk of developing more serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The level of body fat you should have will vary depending on age and sex. What is visceral fat? Visceral fat, or 'central obesity', is used to describe the fat thats located inside the peritoneal cavity--that is, your midsection around your waist. Rather than being located directly under the skin as subcutaneous fat, this 'visceral fat' can be found inbetween your internal organs, many of which are situated in this
cavity. Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between high levels of visceral fat and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease as well as other medical conditions. The BF508 will give you a reading between 30 levels, to indicate your level of visceral fat; a normal reading would be between 1 and 9, with a reading higher than 15 being very high. What is subcutaneous fat? Subcutaneous fat not only accumulates around the stomach but also around the upper arms, hips and thighs, and can cause a distortion of the bodys proportions. Although not directly linked to increased risk of disease, it is thought to increase pressure on the heart and lead to other complications. The BF508 does not display subcutaneous fat uniquely, but it is included in the body fat percentage
reading as a whole. How can you reduce your body fat? The best way to reduce your overall body fat percentage is to take regular exercise and eat healthily. Using a body composition monitor such as the BF508 will give you accurate results, so you can monitor your progress on a fitness regime--or simply keep a check on your general health. The science bit Body fat has low electricity conductivity. The BF508 measures the body fat percentage by using the Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) method. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues with higher water content that conducts electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The BF508 sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak
electrical current is NOT felt while operating the BF508. In order for the scale to determine body composition, it uses the electrical impedance, along with your height, weight, age and gender information, to generate results based on pre-determined data of body composition.
