Howls of rage greeted Dylan as he presented the world with folk rock--he was roundly booed at both the Newport Folk Festival & the Royal Albert Hall. Yet here is one of those moments of cross-influence that changed the course of popular music. BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME gave His Bobness an audience on a plate; it was a massive breakthrough. An album of two different sides, acoustic (his past) & electric (his future), it contains milestones in the blues-rockers " Maggie's Farm" & " Subterranea ...

Though 1966's BLONDE ON BLONDE is usually singled out as the most innovative Bob Dylan album, its predecessor HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED is the one that definitively marks Dylan's transformation from progressive folk singer to visionary rock poet. It's Dylan's first fully electric album, powered by the manic intensity of Mike Bloomfield's skull-&-crossbones blues-rock guitar leads & Al Kooper's rich organ fills. While many of the songs are presented in a traditional 12-bar blues format, the lyrics ...

Bob Dylan's career has always been about defying expectations. Accordingly he followed 1997's much-heralded TIME OUT OF MIND with a marked about-face. Where its predecessor was a bleak emotional landscape full of languid atmospheres, existential sentiments, & graveyard vocal delivery, LOVE & THEFT finds Dylan much more energized & hopeful. Instead of swamp-like textures, we get sharp, cracking bar-band blues, & lissome ballads with a '20s/'30s feel. The old codger has never sounded more ...

The successor, of course, to Bob Dylans original Greatest Hits collection, More Greatest Hits is remarkable on so many different levels that it remains one of the crucial compilations in his catalog, no matter how many other, bigger & brighter collections have been unleashed in the years since then. For starters, it brought half an albums worth of unheard performances onto the market, beginning with a beautiful 1964 live version of " Tomorrow Is a Long Time." There was a gli ...

Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits

The 1995 U.K. release Greatest Hits is a good round-up of 12 mid-'60s basics from Dylan, drawing heavily from Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde, adding "Blowing' in the Wind, It Ain't Me Babe, and The Times They Are A-Changin'" for balance. It's not quite definitive but it's a good blend of hits that's worthwhile for casual fans. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.
